: : Dear Fellow Traveller,

: Gardiner's Island, says you?! Ha! 'Tis a swine belly lie to call it so. The Gardiner's have no claim to Mann-i-tuck ... swindlers, the whole lot of them.

: It were not Gardiners who first held English and Dutch titles to the island, but Barnabus Horton. The Gardiners are mere carpetbagging swindlers who took history's claim.

: : And 'tis was Caleb Horton, son of Barnabus and Mary (nee Langton), born first on the island ... October 1640 to be precise! Those Gardiners-come-lately produced no child 'til fully a year later.

: : On behalf of the esteemed Horton & Hallock families I protest this "Gardiner's Island" claim!

: They hold the island known by the indians as Manchonacke, and by the English as the Isle of Wight, first by rightful purchase in 1639, by steadfast friendship of over two decades with Wyandance, sachem of Pawmanack; and finally by a grant recognized by the Earl of Starling, of the Kingdom of Scotland.

: In the rear view mirror of history, some names appear larger than others, and some are but dimly reflected. That the island is named for that family, is a mark of the fates that deposited them on America's seaswept shore.

: They lived with and among the islands Indian inhabitants, cut off for years from their fellow colonists, confining themselves to farming and animal husbandry. That Kidd decided to bury his ill gotten booty caused them nothing but vexation and anguish. All charges that they kept some of it have been rightfully dropped.

: And you that sit far from the firelight's glow, by any chance are you acquainted with a woman by the name of Goody Garlick?

: Fellow Traveller

Dear Fellow Traveller,
Goody Garlick, is it now? The witch?! I suppose she had a beef with those Gardiners too. For my part, I declare them innocent of Kidd treasure looting ... but not of false title.
Ah, the quirks of history come back to haunt.

While you stoke the fire to blazing, I'll sit back further from its glow.
