This is forever a mystery to me, too, and it's one of my problems with our beloved LOTM, wonderful movie that it is. If Mann didn't feel the Cooper characters or plot were interesting enough or politically acceptable, why didn't he create his own characters with their own names and personalities? Why take a character literary hero, change his name, change his politics, change his personal behavior and then try to pass him off as the character Cooper created? And then take all the other original characters and rewrite them into different behavior and different relationships to each other, etc. etc.? If Mann disliked the story and the characters that much, why did he use it in the first place?

Seems to me Mann, with all his creativity and vision could have written an original script around the Fort William Henry Massacre and created his own characters and plot and taken the credit for good authorship as well as a fine movie. Why do talented and imaginative artists take somebody else's work and rewrite it rather than creating their own work?
