Thanks Rich. So I take it, as its name implies, it was merely a sash? Did not perform a function such as a strap for anything?
Guess that makes sense now that I think about it. The rifle strap looks to be leather.....and I guess he would not have taken off his haversack or powder horn or whatever to carry it into that village claiming it was a record of his people.

Ah well, nothing keeps me from using it in one of those ways I suppose.......
