Oh, Ann, you sheltered child, you! As an older, wiser Mama, I know some of these worldly terms that you aren't familiar with. A Doofus, my dear, is...ummmm....ah...how shall I say this delicately...A JERK. A BOZO. A NERD. But now, a NUMPTY doofus...well that's a whole 'nuther animal. ( I WAS going to say that Miss Katie was too ladylike to tell you that a Numpty Doofus is a Doofus of Ill Repute, but as innocent as you are, you might believe me!) What would the nearest American slang be, Kate...dummy? Something on that order, Ann. That's all. And I never heard the word before last night, either, so don't feel bad. (Numpty, not Doofus. Doofus I've known forever! And BEEN forever!)
