On this date in 1862 the battle of Locust Grove was in full swing. The
Federal Army moving from Fort Scott, KS was advancing across the Cherokee line in Indian Territory.

The only available force to meet the 5,000 Federal troops was CSA
Colonel Stand Watie and his faithful force of the 1st Cherokee regiment, and Colonel Clarkson's Battalion of Missourians.

These brave men met the overwhelming odds on the 3rd of July 1862.

Although Colonel Clarkson's group were surprised with 30 killed and over 110 captured, Colonel Watie with unsurpassed courage and honor continued to resist.

Colonel Watie's regiment encountered six-fold their numbers in the 6th
Kansas. Finally, after a valiant struggle, Col. Watie and his men were
forced to fall back into Arkansas.
