LOTM question (The Book)

Hope someone can answer this for me. Several times in the book, Hawkeye mentions i conversation that he is "a man without a cross"; I'm not sure if this is referring to white man's religion or if it has something to do with Indian culture. Can't figure it out in context. Anybody know? Thanks!
