I read tonight that Mel is playing a FICTIONAL character, "LOOSELY based on Francis Marion." How historically accurate THAT will be, who knows...but I guess he's not really playing The Swamp Fox, himself. I also read they had to drain the cypress swamp/reserve at S. Carolina's Cypress Gardens to look for any obstacles that would be dangerous to the horses when they film them riding into the swamp.
