: Gayle, Marcia, Jo and all,
: I have given up trying to reread Cooper's LOTM. Every time I pick it up, fully intending to get through it, I simply can't. After Mann's LOTM - Cooper is a disappointment (sorry Gayle). I enjoy his other books, but I've come to realize I will never be able to enjoy reading LOTM again - the movie was just too perfect and too different from the original.

Hi, Pat! I know what you mean. The only way I can get it to work for me is to keep Hawkeye separate from Natty Bumppo in my mind. I think of it as either 1) a completely different story with similar characters or 2) the same story told by completely different observers, hence the variance in descriptions of characters, implied motives, etc. After all, eyewitnesses to the same event can have markedly different accounts, not only of what happened, but in their descriptions of the people involved. Thus, I can make myself believe that Cooper saw Natty as a plain looking, if not downright ugly, man, while Michael Mann saw him as our gloriously handsome DDL.

This is not to say I've read LOTM, yet. I DID finish the Deerslayer and was able to enjoy it without it intruding on the place the movie occupies in my heart. And one of these days, I'll read LOTM, too. I want to have that experience, as well. I think there is much to learn from those books. But the movie...well, I just keep that on a whole 'nuther level, untarnished, and untouchable! ;o)
