Here's one of my fresh blackberry pies that I baked just this afternoon, and here, let me put on this extra apron you keep hanging behind the kitchen door so I can help you with the fixin's. Quite a crowd collecting out there on the veranda!

: Just between us, dear, I stopped by Miss Polly Anna's on the way over to see if I couldn't patch things up a bit with her, and she says she'll be coming right along. Strangest thing, too - - you know that big green chi--, um, parrot of hers? Well, seems Miss Polly Anna went looking for him a while ago, and where do you suppose she found him? Sitting out on her front porch carrying on some sort of birdie conversation with - of all things! - that mangey old hound Hector. And wonder of all wonders, poor dear lost Painter was sitting right there, cool as you please, looking from one to the other as if the three of them were the best of friends! Why here comes Miss Polly Anna now, and that French creature, Jeanne D'Arc with her. Well, bless my soul, if that isn't Basil sitting right atop of Painter's head and Hector trotting along like a royal bodyguard! Will wonders never cease around here!

Howdy, Miss Gaylee!

Thanks ever so for offering to help me in the kitchen! I can sure use an extra pair of hands, and my, oh my, does that blackberry pie look good! Sometime you MUST share your recipe with me, dearie...and I know you WON'T leave out any crucial ingredient (like some would) just to make folks think Miss Marcia can't make a blackberry pie to compare with YOURS.

What's that noise I hear commencing out front? Hector, Painter and Basil, all arriving at once, you say? Goodness, what a racket is starting up! I can't leave this skillet unattended...would you be a dear and see what's going on? And make sure the first arriving guests are comfy? There's mint juleps in the pitcher, for those as likes 'em, and apple juice for them as don't. Mercy, it's gettin' rowdy at there! Do go check on things, Miss Gaylee!
