Ayesha, thanks for the encouragement and kind words. Also, thanks to Dana and E for the additional encouragement.

: Hi Petra and Danalee,

: Thanks Petra for the Link. It sounds like fun and should be very stimulating.

: Danalee, It's funny how many people's negative sides can come out in conversations on the web. Sometimes people can be so intense with their feelings. Predjudices seem to pop up all over the place. There should be a new generation of "web therapists" to monitor the anger! I know it is idealistic, but wouldn't it be great to have "one world, one people" as the rule (a place where predjudice doesn't exist)! I know many people who have had their feelings hurt in chat rooms.

: On another note, wouldn't it be fun to have our own book club. What do ya all think??

: Have a great day everyone,

: Ayesha

: : This sounds like a great opportunity. I may give it a shot, but I'm a bit 'gun-shy' Up until several weeks ago I belonged to a Sherman Alexie group which discussed his various works. I contributed to a certain thread re: bigotry and ignorance of Whites about Indians. I mentioned my excitement over going to the Spokane pow-wow over Labor Day and how I thought alot of White misconceptions were based on ignorance, not necessarily overt prejudice. After my comments were posted I got an incredibly nasty email message sent to me directly, not through the group: "Of course you think it's cool. That's because you have the luxury of NOT BEING INDIAN. You pick and choose what culture you want to belong to. You can experience a pow wow but can never educate anyone else about what it really means because you experience Indian Culture from an outside perspective. Sorry, now I'm becoming angry, but that's because I meet so many non-Indians who think we have it going on to the point we're experiments, we're pets. And it does nothing for me to hear how supportive you are of me...you talk of other people's ignorance to the point you cannot see your own..." It got worse, and soon the board itself was posting messages by Indians suggesting the White posters go elsewhere. Not feeling particularly strong emotionally at that point I decided to drop from the group.

: : I know you take your chances when you join any group. I'm just glad this group is supportive and has a sense of humor, too. Thanks, all. Danalee

: : : Hi everyone!

: : : Anyone interested in joining online discussions of books relating to Native issues and/or by Native writers? A couple of people have started a book club at the new site of NativeWeb, they came up with a list of book recommendations and have set a schedule by which they all try to have read a certain book and discuss it at their message board. I probably won't get around to read these books at the given time, but maybe some of you would be interested? The site is at http://www.nativeweb.org:81/ (link below) and you need to get a password to get in. To find the book discussion board, go to message boards, then to special interest conferences, and there is the book club conference.

: : : Below is the schedule that Monique and John have just announced there, and they emphasized that everyone is welcome to join in.
