I know there were historical inaccuracies with the movie (done to give Mel some love interest, since his True Love dies so early on) but it's one heck of a watch! (And not just for the pleasure of seeing Mel in a kilt, either!)

: Parts of it were filmed on the island of Moorea, near Tahiti. It is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I read that DDL didn't like it there. The weather was awful and everyone's spirits were in the dumps. I could hardly imagine that. It's like a magical place to me. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I guess it's hard to like a place if you've only been there once & the weather was awful the whole time. Of course, watching the movie, it sure doesn't LOOK like they had bad weather, does it? It looks like the lovliest of places, if you go for tropical paradises, that is! Bein' partial to cold weather myself, I'll still take a log cabin on a mountainside, with an icy, ferny waterfall nearby...*sigh!*
