Chris asks:
: Hi Marcia,
: Ahhh, I see. Yeah, I think you've mentioned NC once or twice. When and where did you live in Alaska?
: Chris

My father was stationed at an Army post in Whittier, about 60 miles from Anchorage, when I was 12. A long time ago, yes, but I was old enough to remember it very well. I was there from November through April or so...the PEAK months, eh?? It was a fascinating place...we could watch whales from our apartment window overlooking the harbor.

The port has long since closed, but my memories of the big, turquoise glacier behind us and the harbor in front of us are quite vivid. Dark every day by 4:00pm, and no dawn until about 10:00am. Snowflakes the size of half dollars which did NOT melt when they landed on the harbor water. The occasional moose. And for some strange reason, I remember LIMPETS. They were all over the stones in the stream nearby. I thought they were so interesting. The snow was so deep, we had to go through tunnels to get from the apartment to the PX and school, etc. And the General's house had a big ol' pole on top of it with a red flag on it, so that if the house was buried during the night, they could find it and dig him out the next day!!

On thinking it over, I'm pretty sure North Carolina is far enough north to do me for awhile! Alaska was profoundly beautiful, but there IS a limit to my desire for cool weather, after all. ;o)
