Well, folks, it's Mohicanland Book Club Let's Talk About "The Deerslayer" Day! It's been fun over the last week watching people read into the first couple of chapters or so and not be able to resist commenting about it here and there, either on the Board or in E-mail.

Slight digression before getting serious: even while acknowledging the fact that, if the characters didn't talk, Cooper wouldn't have any story, I have to agree with Marcia and others who see Natty as running on endlessly. If it were real life, I think Harry and Natty would have limited their conversation to grunting and pointing. Think about that scene where Harry shot at the deer and caused the mountains to echo and reecho the gunshot. Natty gets real patronizing about reproving Harry for alerting any possible enemies about their arrival on the lake, but in fact the two of them have talked nonstop the whole trip, and any Indians that missed that had to be in another county!

So! How about Hurry Harry? What do you like or dislike about him, and why do you think Cooper created the character?
