My opinion ... in the context of the film/novel ... We all know that the Mohican Tribe still exists, right?

Uncas was the "INTENDED" last of the Mohicans. Throughout the story, HE, it is assumed, will carry on the blood-line of the disappearing tribe. Of course, as fate would have it, Chingachgook, the father, ends up BEING the last Mohican ... a powerful use of symbolism representing the plight of the American Indian people.
