Well, I guess NO ONE knows for sure. The obvious answer I referred to earlier was, of course, that it was stocked with bass.

Here's the Biltmore's answer:

"Landscape Curator, Bill Alexander, advised that during construction,
around 1890, the "now called" bass pond, was referred to as the lake. The
earliest indication of it being called the bass pond was in 1901. The
purpose of the lake was rowing and fishing for Vanderbilt's guests. We
assume that it was stocked with fish for guests."

That would seem to be it!
