: : : : : Chris,
: : : : : Well, at least I am not the only one (Hey, Collin, what chapter are you on these days....???)
: : : : : Indian Killer??? How did I feel about it?? Kinda unsure; sort of still wondering exactly why the main character did what he did and all of a sudden just walked off the building....I may have missed something; however, I did finish it; and did like the writing. Now, if that main character could have talked as much as the Deerslayer; Hurry or Hutter.....maybe there would have been more insight...

: : : : : Oh~ good morning Chris and Bill!

: : : : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

: : : : Ooooooooh, *hanging head in disgrace here* - I'm still on Chapter 8!! How do you guys find the time to read, at this time of year?!?! You gotta tell me!! I think I'm doing something wrong here! But I swear, I WILL catch up! (To Chapter 9, I mean!). Can I join you in the 'slow readers' group?

: : : : Take care, everyone,
: : : : Kate.

: : : Hi Jo and Kate,

: : : Sure, Kate, we'll take anyone who hasn't read past chapter 10 or 11. Welcome to the group.

: : Kate, congratulations on getting to chapter 8!
: : Collin; not enough to do on the lake today if you've finished the book???? (Oh, if they've taken that line out of the DVD version; I guess I am dating myself!) Ayesha, catch up!

: : Jo
: : (don't ask where I get the time to read....)

: To all you inveterate and determined readers - fast and slow (all speeds welcome):

: It's a real revelation reading through these posts! Did I actually hear a vote for Natty's communication skills? Good grief! Must admit there's something to be said for a communicator - - HOWSEVER - - moderation in all things is a good rule, too. This might be a good thing to think about for Sunday's discussion, though - do you think you begin to understand the character enough to be puzzled by the kind of man he becomes when we get to Last of the Mohicans? (Just a little "whet the appetite" idea there).

: Jo made a great observation with the post on night vision. Here's something I have never been able to figure out - when Hetty was floating around in the canoe in the pitch dark, and Judith and Natty couldn't even see her well enough to figure out where she was even though they were within easy conversational distance, still she paddled her canoe over to the shore, landed right where she wanted to, and walked away into the forest. The forest had to have been much darker than the lake was, and yet she plods a couple of miles up the shoreline until she finally gets tired enough to make up a bed and get some sleep. Granted, Cooper was aware that he was getting a little beyond believability and describes how she is guided by the slope of the land, but even so, her progress amazed me.

: One thing Cooper did accomplish though, by creating a sense of so much darkness, was to produce a magnificent visual contrast whenever there was a campfire. I really had a sense of the brilliance of the fire and the shadows dancing against the trees and bushes and pushing against an almost palpable wall of blackness surrounding it. The Indian campfires in the night scenes were wonderful!

: Has anybody got any favorite scenes or characters yet?

: Gayle

Thanks, Gayle! I was suffering from a severe case of GCPW(Gayle's Cooper Posts Withdrawal).

I DO find myself comparing Natty with Hawkeye. I look forward to reading LOTM again. I think I will find Hawkeye much more interesting having read Deerslayer.
