Actually, Native Americans often ate their horses (along with their dogs) in order to survive harsh winters. They also viewed them as livestock, and an old or lame horse did not spend years eating up grasses needed for the young and healthy, but found themselves simmering in the stew! But eating MY horse, now that's a different story! YRH
