: : Dear Doc,

: : I knew I liked you for some other reason than your sharp (as a diamond-cutting laser) wit. I too am descended from West Virginia mountain folk - from Boone county, a little town called Racine (a little northwest of Charleston.) Did you happen to be acquainted with any Clendenin's or McCormick's while living there. No offense intended, but it gives one a might bit of a shudder to think one may be distantly related to the infamous Doc Mary, seein's how my folk settled the Kanawa Valley (right along with ole' Daniel Boone himself. Great.........Uncle Oscar Clendenin is said to have coon hunted with the boy.)But that kind'a thinkin' ranks right up there with "Oh, you're from California...Do you know Bob? Since it's a remote possibility though, us might bein' kin an' all, if you need any Gnomely related duties tended to at the Gathering, I'd be happy to oblige.

: : From WV to NC,

: Well now, Doc and Diana. What do ya know! We mighta been neighbors way back when, seein as how we're descended from Daniel's brother Squire.

My mother's relations were all from Kentucky or over the border
in Indiana, but then they moved to Charleston. My dad's
relatives originally settled just north of the Shenandoah,
and then they moved outside of Clarksburg. They came
along way after Mr. Boone, though when I look at some
of our old family photos, I think he could of used them
to scare away the hostiles. Some of those old babes looked
like they sharpened their faces on hatchets! My father's
grandfather joined the Confederate Army and spent the
war as a scout for Mosby's Rangers. Our family has a
certain genius for picking the wrong side -- in the
early 1900s they sold all that pesky Coca Cola stock
they had accumulated and invested in the Packard
Automobile Company...hence Doctor M's current carefree
life of luxury! After my dad married my mother, they
ended up in New Jersey of all places ...but my dad
kept that West Virginia twang till the day he died.
"The feesh is oan the deesh." LOL! Here endeth Vol. I
of The Doctor Mary Story: The Early Years.

PS Even though we have no familial connections, I
appreciate any assistance in the way of Gnomal Torment.

Doc M
