Ed,
As to your question as to whether Travis actually drew the line in the dirt, I just purchased, but haven't read it all, a book entitled "Exploring The Alamo Legends," by Wallace O. Chariton. One of the subjects, of course, is the drawing of Travs' line in the dirt.
I browsed through it quickly when I read your question, and the answer depends upon whom you talk to. Of particular interest is page 206 where Texas historian J. Frank Dobie is quoted. It's too lengthy to go into now, and if you can't find the book, email me and I'll make a copy of this page or type it out for you in an email.
The bottom line for me, and as a quote from Mr. Dobie: "Without proof that Travis did not draw the line, believing the story would seem to be requisite to being a loyal Texan."
Having read much on the subject, and being a loyal Texan, I believe it!
