Uncle Mark, Nice to see you on board again. I too check the board almost daily and am sorry to see so little activity. Yeah, I've seen the movie "Gettysburg" a couple, three times and never get tired of it. I am writing regarding your question about Joshua Chamberlain's fight at Little Roundtop and how factual the movie was regarding his activities. Quite frankly, I don't know if the movie embellished it or not, but from all the accounts I read, it was pretty accurate. I've walked around Little Roundtop, and you can see the position he defended. If I had your email address, I could email you a site on Chamberlain I found after reading your posting.
I enjoyed the movie also and I think I learned more than you could imagine. I was particularly interested in the turmoil between Longstreet and Lee. After seeing the movie and reading accounts, I realize much of the blame for the south's defeat, at least at Gettysburg, can be laid at the feet of Gen. Lee. Apparently Longstreet voiced such opinions and was almost thought to be a traitor, and Pickett's charge and Hood's assault of Little Roundtop drove a stake through their relationship that Longstreet never got over. And Longstreet was never given his due by the rest of the south because of his opinions voiced about Lee's decisions there.
Another thing I learned from the movie and my own reading was the effect of Jeb Stuart's not getting info to Lee, and his fight with Custer at Hanover. All in all, a very intersting movie, and I hope it was much more factual than Hollywood. I think it was.
I saw in a documentary about the filming of the movie that part of Pickett's charge was made either on the very field or close by, and that some of the re-enactors swore they could feel the spirits--ghosts--of those southern boys among them???
These are just a few of my thoughts. I never mind constructive criticism by anyone out there who has opposing views or can straighten me out factually. Let's keep this board going. Frank Bodden
