Well, if Crook had showed up from the South, just as Custer was commencing his attack, the combined force probably could have captured or dispersed the camps.

As to Crook's culpability, I think it is small. I don't think he had any idea of Terry's plan of attack (movements, dates, times, etc.) It is my understanding that Crook reported his battle to headquarters, who forwarded the info to Terry, but too late for Custer and his men.

Crook probably could not have sent a message directly to Custer, because Crook did not know where Custer was, and also, did not know that Custer was independent of Terry.
