Dr. Uncle Mark drove the Big Red Monty into the driveway of the Niece and Nephew’s perfect home; jumping out dressed in shorts and Saratoga 225th T-shirt, kilt tan noticeable, he entered the house. The Mother looked up from her craft making (some beaded snowman trash!), stared in amazement, turned red, shouted, “Oh, God!” and disappeared into the dark regions of the house. The Father peered over his newspaper, grunted, and went back to reading about the new housing developments he could buy into, where concrete and bricks and siding were being slapped onto Mother Earth, where streams were being dredged and diverted, where the environment was being destroyed to make it “people friendly”.
However, the Niece and Nephew leaped into Dr. Uncle’s arms, shouting, “Where have you been? We haven’t seen you in months and we’re tired of crafts and CNN!!”
“Oh, ho, my little heather huggers! I have been fighting the housing developers who have decided to dig up the land around my house and drive the deer and rabbits from their homes.” (Father looked up from his paper and gave a little sneer!) “And I have seen the true colors of my BOSS...” (Dr. Uncle Mark smiling to himself as he thought of the backwards acronym which BOSS stood for!)....”and have decided that he is a snake in the grass, not be trusted any more than other civilized whites. But, that is not for you two luv bugs to think about. How have you been?”
Hannah and Hiram filled Dr. Uncle Mark in, about the cocktail parties and “clean living of the suburbs”, and craft shows, golf, and..........
“Hey, hold on my sweet Dill pickles. I believe you need a story. Didn’t we leave off on a story where your three ancestors, Flags, Tales and Seamus were caught in a blizzard and Flags goes out to shoot a squirrel and there are Huron eyes watching him? How about the end of that to be told to bring you back to....ahhh....reality?”
And Dr. Uncle began where he had left off....Shelter in the Snow....

Many Flags had just sighted in the squirrel when behind him he heard a soft click. Knowing this sound to be the cock of the hammer on a flintlock, and knowing it meant danger and death from an enemy since Seamus and Three Tales were back in the shelter, he mentally visualized where the sound came from, then turned quickly and fired in that direction. Almost immediately, another flintlock loosed its fury and as Flags lunged to the right a ball whizzed past his left ear.
Flags’ shot had surprised the 4 Huron so that rifle shot aimed from the tallest Huron’s rifle had gone an inch to the right instead of true to Flags’ body. And, back in the shelter, upon hearing one rifle shot and an immediate shot following, Seamus and Tales looked at each other in fear. For, they knew that the second shot could not have been Flags’. They immediately grabbed their rifles, sped out the opening, one going right and the other one left.
The next five minutes went by with action abounding. Flags bounded behind a large beech tree for cover. He cleared out an area in the snow so he could easily and quickly load his rifle. As this happened, the 4 Huron warriors moved forward toward him, they being about 50 yards to his left. A low whistle from them told Many Flags, in all his woods and military lore, that there were more enemy afoot and glancing around him, he saw movement behind him about 100 yards away. “Damn”, he whispered to himself as he realized that there were 4 Huron to his front and several more enemy to his rear, all being aware of his whereabouts.
At that moment, two shots rang out simultaneously. The last few minutes had given Seamus and Tales enough time to move out of the shelter, sight the 4 Huron, signal to each and fire away. Flags watched as 2 of the 4 yelped, jumped and fell forward. Making a quick decision, he turned, sighted intently and shot at the movement behind him, hoping with all his might that these were ind

Hey guys, it has been six months now, do you think you could take a few minutes from protecting Pennsylvania Colony, to treat us to more tales of your adventures? It is a very cold and quiet winter here at Fort Pitt, and I could use some reading material...
