Holy smokes. I just started reading this book by Cooper and it is amazing. As always beautifully descriptive and clever- action, turmoil, intrigue- the whole shebang.
It's set during the revolution and is the story of a son, a redcoat captain, who goes behind enemy lines in disguise to visit his family in New York with forged papers and is captured by American dragoons. Captured, escapes, recaptured and I'm only a third of the way through. He is captured by his good friend who is engaged to his sister and duty bound to turn him over for trial and probable execution. The sister is torn between her loyalties for her brother and her lover. Very complex and reveals a lot about sentiments during the period of the revolution. If you see it around you should pick it up. If you love LOTM and can get used to the old timey writing style you will love it.

Just now reading this post---haven't been on the boards for a while! I will definitely check this book out when I get a chance. I love Cooper's novels. I try to read LOTM once a year. (Dork, I know.) Nobody writes like that anymore. Sigh. Have you read The Wept of Wish-ton-Wish? Once I got past the Pilgrim-style speech (which took me a while), I thought it was really good.
