Truth is this looks A LOT like Northern New England ... mostly the White Mountain Region - aka "The Presidential Range". A bunch of 4000 footers named after U.S. Presidents.

Since the movie was made and the first Gatherings were held some things have changed. The private company that owned the park planned to sell it to developers for building condos, so the State of NC bought it. Some idiot let his toddler crawl under the guard rail and fall off the mountain, so some of the trails are now closed. The elevator was closed for repairs and hasn't re=opened. Last fall the parking area at the top collapsed and is still closed. So it's not like the old days.

Wow - what a shame, looks like it was/is a beautiful spot "before the improvements" ... hope things get squared away.

Not been up there in quite a few years. Very sad how the State has apparently mismanaged a beautiful park. It still looks awesome from the road at least.

I haven't been up there, except to see the movie, in quite some time. I thought when they finally get the elevator fixed I might go back. I remember when they had the LOTM exhibit at the restaurant on the top. I didn't know at the time how rare a thing I was viewing. To me, back then, it was just movie props. The company I worked for had departmental outings each year at Lake Lure. We would have some pointless meetings in the morning then play around the rest of the day. Those who wanted could go to Chimney Rock and hike. I always did that, then afterwards a few of us ended up in Margaritaville for drinks and camaraderie (not company sponsored). A lot has changed since those days. And, of course, this year there was no movie. They had a good thing going, then for some stupid reason, decided to show a Dr. Seuss film one year. I didn't go, but I can imagine that attendance was not great. Next year they went back to LOTM but the crowds were not what they were the first two years. Once they lost their following they could not get it back. I wonder what they will do this year.

"then for some stupid reason, decided to show a Dr. Seuss film one year."
.
No doubt "someone with no idea (or interest) in what was actually happening there" and unfortunately "high enough up" to make any changes he/she wanted to. The sad part is - this approach isn't confined to North Carolina ...

I took my family there today. I hadn't been since it was privately owned. What a disappointment. It's great that this beautiful place is preserved from development, but the cliffside trail is closed, and probably permanently. I think the turn into the gorge and on to the cliffside trail was through Opera Box. I can't even see where that was a possibility from how it's configured today. Best view of the gorge is from the town below, or on the blu-ray. It's $15 bucks a head to get in, and not really worth it, I'm afraid. Nice view of Lake Lure though.

I heard they had problems with the mud slides that affected so much of the area around Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Have they repaired that damage yet?

Fitzhugh, a lot of work was done on the upper parking lot in the past year to correct that problem. State money is good for that kind of improvement. Sadly, I don’t know if the cliff side trail will ever reopen.

Nice, Rob. I just can't fathom why they refuse to reopen the Cliff Trail after all this time.

So, I do know the person at Stewart that worked on these improvements. She’s really sharp. I asked her that very question. Because this is now a state park, there are certain standards that have to be followed. The cliff side trail is just too problematic to make work. That’s not to say it couldn’t be done, but as with anything.. it’s going take a lot of money. I think she’d like to tackle that, but she has to be asked to do it.

I remember the boards over a crevasse you had to traverse to get out there… so that makes sense.

I may have shared this with Rich on Facebook, or even posted these here in some other thread… but I went up there in 2000… took my nice camera (back before Digital), because I wanted to get this trail photograhed… I had the negatives scanned a few years ago, so I could get the best color quality possible, and this was the result. Enjoy everybody.
