The grave news that Mitch Boyer and Curley brought Custer in upper
Medicine Tail Coulee at 4:04 P.M. must have come as a severe shock.
Only a few minutes earlier Boston Custer had reported that Reno was still holding out and that Benteen ought to be up soon. But there was still no sign of the latter, and the headlong retreat of Reno's
men placed them in danger, more in need of help, then able to give help. The warriors who had accomplished this feat were now free to
counter any second attact. The only force at hand was Custer's Battalion, which numbered only 13 Officers, 193 enlisted men, 3 scouts, and 2 non combatants, for a sobering total of 211. with out reserve ammunition.Under these circumstances, did Custer attack immediately with what little he had or play for a little time to allow support to come up?
