: : I always interpreted some cynism behind that smirk, like Nathaniel's thinking "typical pig-headed British." Nathaniel just told him "Your wounded should try walking back to Albany - they'll never make the passage north" as if to suggest this arrogant soldier should take the two women back to Albany as well. And so begins the immediate dislike that Nat. and Duncan have for each other.

: I never thought of it that way before. Makes sense. So, you think he was thinking Duncan had been stupid to bring the ladies in the first place, putting them in harm's way, and therefore looked down on him?

Pretty much. I think it's funny the way Cora and Alice are dressed as if they were going to a ball at the governor's mansion - the beautiful dresses and hats, complete with earrings. Rather impractical for the way they were traveling. When they leave the fort, they'd wisened up, wearing simpler clothes with skirts that weren't so heavy.
