It's just that I infinitely prefer Michael Mann's gorgeously stalwart version of Nathaniel Poe to Cooper's garrulous ol' Natty Bumppo. But I know neither would exist without Cooper's tale.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia (*heavy sigh*)

How can you suspect me of lurking in ambush to heave Big reference books at fans of our Mann hero? I am far too small to heave Big books around, although I have been known to (accidentally, of course) let one drop on someone's toes. Actually, old as I am, I am a great appreciator of a Real Hunk. (Motto: I may be old, but I'm not dead)

As to the Academy Awards, there is no question they are political, and it is sad that movies like LOTM get short shrift when they have so much to offer. But be it ever thus. Hopefully the actors and all who go went to so much effort to produce LOTM get some satisfaction out of the tributes represented by websites like this which have spawned everything from friendships to the exchange of historical research. After all, reaching people is what art is all about, and LOTM has accomplished that Big Time.
