: : I was recently watching Movie TV which was showing promo and 'the making of' material about a movie I think is called Little Tree. Tantoo plays the grandmother of a native american boy bringing him up with his native language and customs. He is then taken by authorities and put into an "Indian School" because it was illegal for him to be learning those things. The child's grandparents told him to send his messages to them through the first star! I missed the dates that it was set in but it looked like it might have been the 40's or 50's. It looked good!

: Hi Erin,

: The movie is called "The Education of Little Tree"( It is based upon a book, but I forgot the name of the author..)It is playing in selected theatres in the States.

Erin and Rebecca,
the author of the book is Forrest Carter. He is quite a controversial figure, and as far as I've read, the story is not based on his own childhood contrary to what apparently was believed earlier. There are sources that say he wrote speeches for George Wallace under a different name and was even involved with the KKK, but other sources deny that and point out how this would not fit in with this book. Below is a link concerning Carter.
The movie was widely praised (it plays in the 30s) as portraying that time quite realistically. I haven't seen it (another one to rent some time), but my mother-in-law said it really stirred her up emotionally because it reminded her so much of her childhood and school education.
