"We have also asked Caritas Internationalis to contribute to this cause, as a most important act of human solidarity. The situation is quite frightening."
"In addition to the tragedy of deaths, there are survivors in need of help in the form of food, medicine, tents and blankets. They have nothing, while living and sleeping in this desert area. Travel to the region is also made difficult. To reach the disaster area there is only a small airport and a single desert road."
Incredible tragedy. Contributions & relief for these victims is being sought among the international community.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Comparative Cultures: I'm not a proponent of moral equivalence [a pox upon my house!], but of moral absolutism [a pax upon my house!] & that urges me to believe that any & all assistance that can be provided, especially by wealthier western nations, ought to be provided not for 'oneness' or 'sameness' or great expectations, but for mere humanity.

You are right, that is to do good for the benefit of humanity. My statement was not meant to say that the Iranian people should have given us aid after 9-11, but that they could have at least sent their condolences (Which they did not). It is our nature of being 'right' and 'good' that makes ours the better culture.
Agreed. Condolences, at least, were in order. It's the rights of a thing that first matters, and the response that is later measured.
quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Visuals: I have to *share* this recurring image which I think you'd fully appreciate; While reading your posts, I can almost see a faint image of the Coliseum; a backdrop to your perched position, where you, a devoted son of the republic & dutiful legionaire, seize every moment to passionately pontificate on the greatness of Rome. Change the place & time a bit, a little redistribution of the barbarian hordes and ... by Jove, I think we've got it!

Well, now that I have stopped laughing, I can most certainly admit that you have painted a fairly accurate picture of me. No appologies, and no regrets, I can say without reservation that I had always done my duty, and in a small way paid the price. I cannot lie and say that it was for 'King and Country', but that it was for the guys in my squad, my buddies.
And this might win you laurels of virtue! A right & good thing ... |

Compare our response to their tragic loss of life to what they "offered" us after 9-11, I guess that just further demonstrates the differences between our cultures. Remember what I said about the myth of 'moral equivalance'?
Sarge,
On the Persian Expedition: I'm glad, too, that we and several nations have responded with aid, though 40,000 dead & far more than that wounded, not to mention the collapse of nearly an entire city, is going to require a great deal of alms. People might want to contact their local Red Cross to inquire.
On Comparative Cultures: I'm not a proponent of moral equivalence [a pox upon my house!], but of moral absolutism [a pax upon my house!] & that urges me to believe that any & all assistance that can be provided, especially by wealthier western nations, ought to be provided not for 'oneness' or 'sameness' or great expectations, but for mere humanity.
On Goode & Holye Workes: If we really want to disprove the theory of moral equivalency we'd beware the urge to humbly boast. Do a thing because it's right & good, not because it's better.

On Disclaimers: I want it hereby and always known I am not condoning or encouraging this sort of behavior, merely observing. |
