Hi

Anyone seen ‘The New World’ starring Colin Farrell and Wes Studi? (Wes!...Carter, maybe you have?). It's coming out in the UK Jan/Feb 2006. Would love to hear any comments about the film and if it is worth seeing.

Malick has done 4 films in something like 32 years, he attempts (and I think succeeds in his last two films) to create art, not really the cheap entertainment most people with short attention spans go to the theater for.

I resent that people think because I don't like, nearly hate, Terrance Malick films that I'm defective in some way.. I don't.. Oh look a chicken...............

Thanks IG. I figured he had a very small part, but thought I would have been able to pick him out. I'll watch it again when I'm not so tired, that might help.

Give it a go Red. You might find you like it. I thought parts of it were better than others; and I DID watch the whole thing, so it couldn't have been THAT bad! It just wasn't what I was expecting. Be sure and let us know what you think if you do watch it.

Don't mind the negative comments. I never go by what others say. I always like to watch a movie and judge for myself.

As to where Michael is P, it has been a while since I watched it but I recall I just noticed him by his amazing eyes. If I find time I will go and see if I can find the scene he is in for you. Bery brief, blink and you miss him.

Finally! Someone else who shares my complete and total annoyance at Colin Farrell. He's good-looking, I guess, but even that takes a back seat to the annoyance factor.

Haven't seen The New World yet, but it's on my Netflix queue. Maybe I'll move it up to the top and get it over with. For some reason, I feel like it's a movie that I should see, but after all the negative comments posted here. . . . Oh well. I'm on Spring Break with nothing else to do. May as well watch bad movies!

Well, I picked this up on ebay the other week and watched it. I must say, I was disappointed. Perhaps I should have come to my trusted mohican friends first! I'm not totally sorry I bought it - but I'm definitely glad I didn't buy a new copy at full price - maybe it'll grow on me after the 2nd or 3rd time I watch it. After all, I wasn't hooked on LOTM until my 2nd viewing. I know...

I was hoping for more than I got from "The New World", knowing the cast included Wes Studi and Michael Greyeyes, two excellent actors. BTW IrishGirl, where in the world is Michael Greyeyes? I watched and watched and couldn't pick him - it's not like the dialog distracted me either! I agree, Q'orianka Kilcher was amazing as Pocahantas, however the depiction of the natives was a little too 'caveman' for me.

I've seen it too but i actually found it quite boring. and i was really disappointed because Wes Studi's parts were so short. I've expected something more from it. but still there are good moments and I also liked the young girl.

Maybe I'm not so impartial for Ireally don't like Colin Farrell and he irritates me so much but still I think the movie might have been better. And shorter.

Jamestown looks like Jamestown ... spot on ... so much fine imagery ... quite a bit of "beneath the surface" ...It is a film that requires thought ... a lot of emotional stuff swirling about ... I'm still thinking ... Be prepared!

My sister and i bought the DVD on a whim and watched it together. Yes, the film is beautifully made. I could just imagine myself there ... it felt more like being IN the film than OUTSIDE of it. But like Rich mentioned, it does tend to drag ... a lot. At times I found myself bordering on bored, and then suddenly my interest was stirred again. Definitely not for someone who doesnt want to think too much while watching a movie. The 14 yr old actress was fantastic ... great performance by someone so young.

I just watched this and I enjoyed it very much. It is a different sort of movie. I was beginning to wonder if Colin Farrell would ever speak but at last he does speak. The music could be annoying at times and I too wish there was more dialogue. It does tend to drag in places but overall I enjoyed it. I loved Wes's parts although they were too few. Carter, I too enjoyed him perusing the English gardens. He looked like a fish out of water. The new girl Kilcher was really great in this part, perfect for it. I love Michael Greyeyes and watched for his part which I saw briefly but could only really recognize him by his great eyes. He was not in it very long and did not speak, too bad. They should have given the Native actors more screen time and let them have some dialogue too, the ones like Wes and Michael. At least Wes got to speak I suppose. Just my thoughts.

Hmmmm ...

"Poetry set to film" ... yes, that is what this film is. It IS a visual and aural spectacle. The senses are aroused. Sometimes, you really feel that you are in primeval America. Interesting soundtrack by James Horner, with a couple of excellent themes.

Trouble was, my butt was sore ... the film, to me, drags. Imagine the final 20 minutes of LOTM - all that action without any dialog. This entire film is like that - OK, I exaggerate - without the action. The last movie I saw with so little spoken word was ... well, it was ... a SILENT FILM! Jeez ... Was the word "Pocahontas" EVER uttered? I don't think so. Nor was, "John Rolfe". I mean, how is one to know who he is? That said, this movie is a work of art. The young Indian actress is a delight. Great native costuming & presentation ... Jamestown looks like Jamestown ... spot on ... so much fine imagery ... quite a bit of "beneath the surface" ...

Well, after reading everyone's comments, I made the decision to go see it. I looked up showtimes in my city and much to my surprise, it isn't playing! We have two large movie complexes and it is not at either one. So a more regional search shows that I would currently have to drive to Ithaca (about 50 miles away) to see it.

So what gives? Is this in a limited release? Is it appealing more to the "artsy" movie crowd, which would explain Ithaca (Cornell University, and all)? Did Regal and Loews Cinemas decide they would make more money showing movies like "Underworld Evolution" (critics rated D+) or "Big Momma's House 2" (critics rated C-)?

Grrrrrrrrr........
Carter Posted - January 26 2006 : 9:30:56 PM
I loved it! But be prepared...it is not a "movie" in the traditional sense of the word. It is more like poetry set to film. Q'orianka Kilcher was brillant; how a 14 year old could turn in such a moving performance... WOW! Expect a lot of beautiful visuals and less dialog. In some places scenes tend to jump while other scenes drag. Colin Farrell had an outstanding performance as the fickle lover, probably because he has had a lot of practice.

I can understand why Wes had so little screen time now. All of you know what a strong film presence he has. Malick probably noticed this as well and realized that he would have overshadowed the fragile romance. The part that shows Wes exploring an English garden is my favorite.

I was a bit annoyed at the stereotyping: the natives were objectified as almost mystical creatures while the whites were ugly and mean (Christian Bale was the exception).

It think this movie will appeal more to "chicks" than guys.

I'm going to see it this weekend. Looks like a spectacle ...will post my thoughts ... I expect it to be very good!
CT•Ranger Posted - January 26 2006 : 2:15:53 PM
Listen to Malick's advice on how to watch his films: “just get into it; let it roll over you. It's more of an experience film. I leave you to fend for yourself.” And I completely agree, but I'm a bit of a Malick fan. I think too many people are going into "The New World" expecting an average hollywood action-adventure or historical drama. Malick has done 4 films in something like 32 years, he attempts (and I think succeeds in his last two films) to create art, not really the cheap entertainment most people with short attention spans go to the theater for. If you're not sure if you'll like "The New World," go rent "The Thin Red Line" to see what his films are like. There's very little dialogue, and the little there is is mostly internal, and I believe this is the weakest point of the film. The strengths are in the visual and aural experience. Don't expect to see a completely historically accurate depiction of the history of the Jamestown settlement. That's not the goal, Malick is attempting to tell a story. And while the events portrayed may not be very accurate, the material culture, the clothing, weapons, and buildings, etc. portrayed are very good. In fact I've read a couple reviews from Jamestown archaeologists who praise the depiction of the material culture, especially James Fort for its accuracy. Anyway those are some of my thoughts on "The New World."
Wilderness Woman Posted - January 26 2006 : 1:01:34 PM
I haven't gone to see this yet, and now I am undecided as to whether I really want to spend the money or not.

I went over to the Studigroup message boards and read a couple of reviews. Tasblades absolutely hated it! Others didn't care for it too much. But, Carter seemed to like it.

Carter? Care to comment here for us? Bookworm? Did you see it?
Carter Posted - January 20 2006 : 09:25:38 AM
LOL! You betcha!

Unfortunately, much of Wes' part (along with other acclaimed actors like Christopher Plummer) is on the cutting room floor. Malick seems more facinated with filming grass and trees. Wes even remarked, "Malick shoots some great grass."

But nevertheless, I will be there to get my Studifix no matter how limited the screentime.

Cheers,
Carter

I don't know if I will make it this weekend, but I sure do plan to see it. It looks to be absolutely breathtaking.

I'll just bet there is one person here on the boards who is really anxious to see it!

[Psssst.... Carter! Are you waiting at the theater door right now?]
Bookworm Posted - January 19 2006 : 9:35:01 PM
"The New World" opens in the Harrisburg area tomorrow, so with luck I'll see it this weekend. Is it on anyone else's schedule?

"Drums in the Forest" aka Braddock's Defeat is a DVD sold by Old Bedford Village where the event was held. It is about 1/2 hour long. It was produced from video shot during the event, and it is unique in that there were enought participants on the field so that it looks like the original may have looked, and not like what they show on the history channel. If it had been shot professionally, and some CGI replication used, it would have made one great movie. Also, there are some Mohican Board members in the "cast", although most are on the British side. You might be able to pick out your favorite highlander, but all British look the same to me.

Thanks Carter and Wilderness Woman

I did thought it strange that it was not mentioned anywhere on the Board...makes sense now. I had thought movies where shown in the US quite abit in advance of us seeing them here in the UK.

I went to the site you highlighted, Carter, looks good. I think I will drag my friend along (who is not really into the LOTM, I know, what is wrong with her! It is her only fault although a major one!!!).

Thanks again
Paula

I never heard of Drums in the Forest. I have Drums along the mohawk and The Light in the Forest, but that's a new one on me. Who's in it?

Hi Paula and WW! Yes, the waiting is driving us crazy in the Studi Nation. Wilderness Woman is correct: a limited release is planned for Christmas Day with general release in January.

You can go to the official site: www.thenewworldmovie.com, I believe, and view the trailer and photos.

I hope it lives up to the other Terrence Malick movies! We shall see, won't we?!?

Love,
Carter

Paula, this movie has not been released yet. As of right now, the scheduled date for here in America is Christmas Day. We'll see if they make it!

[Believe me... if it had been released, you would have read all about it here! We are anxiously awaiting!)
