If there's one word I've seen applied to Daniel Day-Lewis over and over again, it's "chameleonic." He seems to lose himself in every role. With that in mind, here's a flick that should be interesting, slated for release in 2008. DDL plays a "turn-of-the century Texas prospector":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469494/

Also starring Ciaran Hinds, one of my favorite actors.

And while we're on the subject of upcoming projects for LOTM cast members: Jodhi May is starring in a new film with (mmm-mmm!) Daniel Craig called Flashbacks of a Fool; Wes Studi has seven projects due for release over the next 2 years (yay!); and Steven Waddington can be seen as a knight templar in Arn Tempelriddaren later this year.

This last movie looks suspiciously similar to Kingdom of Heaven, except without the ever-annoying Orlando Bloom. (Sorry, just my opinion. ) Ladies should check out the star, Joakim Natterqvist, at http://www.arnthemovie.com

Hi Red,

Good to know I'm not alone in my anxious anticipation of this movie! (HEY THERESA - We all know YOU'RE a big fan of Daniel's as well; any word on when / if TWBB will be showing in YOUR area?)

Meanwhile...at least we can all continue to be excited by all of these fabulous reviews by those who HAVE seen the film! Here is the link to the complete review from Times Magazine, dated December 24, 2007:

You and me both, Diane B! I saw a trailer for it when I went to the movies just the other day, and all I can say is that a theater near me better be playing TWBB or, well, there will be blood.

Here is an excerpt from a review of TWBB which appeared in TIME Magazine:

quote:
It is the genius (and I use that word advisedly) of Daniel Day-Lewis's performance to slowly, patiently, show the madness replacing his former rationalism, to prepare us for the film's astonishing ending, an ending one dare not reveal, but that contains what I — resistant as I am to superlatives — consider to be the most explosive and unforgettable 10 or 15 minutes of screen acting I have ever witnessed.

If this movie isn't soon showing somewhere in my little corner of the world, I'm going to completely lose my little mind!!!

Here's another article:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-12-20-daniel-day-lewis_N.htm

I have to say that, since I'm a movie fan, a news junkie, and someone who loves to see "10 best of 2007" lists, this is a wonderful time of year!
RedFraggle Posted - December 22 2007 : 1:26:49 PM
You can catch the trailer for TWBB on IMDB too, I think. (How's that for acronyms?) It looks goooooooood.

Diane, there are two articles on DDL (one with an excellent photo) on www.msnbc.com, but when I post the specific cites, it defaults to the overall msnbc.com. Maybe you can find them by searching in the Entertainment section of the website.

NEWSFLASH: According to Newsweek, Daniel has now been nominated for a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Award!

OK, everyone: time to revive this topic & get everyone as excited as I am about Daniel's soon-to-be-released NEW FILM: "There Will Be Blood"!!! Daniel has already won The LA Film Critics Award AND The New York Film Critics Award for Best Actor for his performance in this film! More great news: TWBB is up for a Golden Globe award for Best Film AND Daniel has been nominated for A Golden Globe for Best Actor! Let's hope this wave of enthusiasm keeps on building right up to the SAG Awards and the Oscars!!!

In addition, the great reviews for TWBB just keep on coming!!! Below is one which was posted on the DD-L.net site:

There Will Be Blood (2007)
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Paul Thomas Anderson’s first feature since 2002’s ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ is loosely adapted from ‘Oil!’, Upton Sinclair’s novel about, er, oil. The turn-of-the-century Texas setting could offer allegorical potential, while the rarely-seen Daniel Day-Lewis’ starring role as budding tycoon Daniel Plainview confirms this as one to watch.

Movie review
From Time Out New York

Americans like to believe that it’s the men in possession of steadfast morals along with callused hands who rise to prominence and take pride in an origin myth that proclaims our country to be nourished solely by the blood and sweat of heroic common people. An alternative history of the U.S. exists, however, one left out of textbooks and starring the scam artists, snake-oil salesmen and supershady industrialists who share the credit for turning the great democratic experiment into what it is today.

Where someone like Daniel Plainview, the stoic figure at the center of There Will Be Blood, falls on the scale isn’t obvious right away. When we meet Plainview (Day-Lewis), he’s a silver miner in search of his fortune, using only the sparks from a pickax to light his way. By the time we leave the character, he’s sequestered in a mansion, a bitter robber baron raging at the heavens. How he goes from rugged individualist to rotting, soulless millionaire—and what that arc says about the dark heart of our nation’s capitalistic obsessions—is the meat of Paul Thomas Anderson’s American masterpiece.

Yes, we know: that word again. But the writer-director’s attempt to map the moment when bootstrap mentality curdles into cutthroat corporate culture earns the title. There hasn’t been a more breathtaking, damning portrait of frontier paranoia since McCabe & Mrs. Miller; let’s hope audiences don’t take as long as they did with Altman’s nouveau Western to realize what they have before them.

It’s oil that provides Plainview’s meal ticket. Along with a young orphan (Freasier), the budding petroleum entrepreneur constructs the facade of a family business. Then he gets a tip about an untapped source in a small California town. Plainview strikes black gold in a big way, while an accident and the local Holy Roller evangelist (Dano) threaten his derrick-dotted Eden.

Up to this point, Anderson has liberally borrowed from Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel Oil!, which also chronicles the meteoric rise of a crude-covered self-made man. Then the director jettisons his muckraking source to introduce a long-lost brother (O’Connor), and the story shifts into a character-study mode that sheds light on our hero’s psyche. “I have a competition in me,” Plainview admits. “I want to see people fail.” Even before the acrid smell of success filled his nostrils, the would-be tycoon’s driving ambition to conquer fueled a damaged sense of humanity. Throw money into the mix—along with betrayal and mental breakdowns—and you have the recipe for a 20th-century monster.

You would expect someone of Daniel Day-Lewis’s thorough commitment and caliber to create a strikingly realistic character hardened by work and emotional scars. Yet that still doesn’t prepare you for the performance he gives here. The star wisely locates the emoti

NEWS FLASH: On November 15th, there was a screening of "There Will Be Blood" in LA!!! I found this info about the screening on the dd-l.net website:

quote:
Paramount Vantage, Back Stage West, and The Hollywood Reporter invite you to join There Will Be Blood writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson and Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis for a screening Thursday, Nov. 15, in Los Angeles.

Loosely adapted from Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel Oil!, There Will Be Blood follows turn-of-the-century Texas miner Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis), whose search for silver leads to an oil fortune. Written and directed by Anderson (Magnolia), the film also stars Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine), Kevin J. O'Connor (Seraphim Falls), and Ciarán Hinds (Munich).

Recipient of an Academy Award, two BAFTA awards, and four Golden Globe nominations, Day-Lewis has starred in films such as My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown, The Gangs of New York, The Last of the Mohicans, and In the Name of the Father.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Anderson and Day-Lewis.

The event will be held Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theater, 5220 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, Calif.

Admission is free. To RSVP, call (323) 956-1006. Seating is limited. Please arrive early.

Also discovered at the dd-l.net website: a link to a NEW TRAILER for this movie! The same link will also allow you to listen to a Q & A that was held with Daniel after the screening - and I just LOVE listening to Daniel talk in his "real" voice! It is oh-so-sexy!!!

Bookworm,

Thank you so much for the link to the NYT article! The picture of DD-L is to die for! He sure doesn't look 50 to me!

The reporter did an excellent job with the interview & the resulting article. What I wouldn't give for an opportunity to talk to DD-L in person like that!!! Anyway...for those who haven't read the article, I have included here some of Daniel's insightful comments regarding LOTM:

quote:
In 1991, Day-Lewis was offered “Last of the Mohicans,” which required him to illustrate the history of a country he knew almost nothing about. Day-Lewis had barely visited America (the first time was on a day trip to Seattle for “My Beautiful Laundrette” when he was in his 20s), and he had never studied the country in any detail. What he knew of America came largely from the movies. “ ‘Last of the Mohicans’ seemed impossible,” Day-Lewis told me. “It scared the life out of me.” For the first time, Day-Lewis was also being packaged and sold by a major Hollywood studio. Posters for “Last of the Mohicans” shouted, “the first American hero,” with a close-up of Day-Lewis’s face. “That was, and will always be, difficult for me,” Day-Lewis said tightly. “The work itself is never anything but pure pleasure, but there’s an awful lot of peripheral stuff that I find it hard to be surrounded by. I like things to be swift, because the energy you have is concentrated and can be fleeting. The great machinery of film can work against that. I have never had a positive reaction to all the stuff that supposedly promotes the film. The thought of it will make me hesitate to do any films at all.”

...and speaking of DD-L, here are a couple of definitions from the "Reenactor's Glossary," (aka, A Cross-disciplinary Glossary of Terms for Historical Hobbyists) which has been mentioned elsewhere on this Board:

Deedle: F & I. A Daniel Day Lewis Lookalike. Similar to Moose & Squirrel, a disparaging term for the guys in the hunting frocks and bandanas, toting American long rifles styling themselves as "long hunters".

Moose & Squirrel: Military reenactors. The rugged individualist buckskinner type, made fun of by militray reenactors for looking like roadies for a heavy metal band and want to join in battle reenactments saying they are "militia."

IMDb is indicating that "Blood" will be released on December 26 in LA and NY - not certain when it's scheduled for wide release. I do remember hearing something about not releasing the film earlier this year because the producers wanted it to be in the running for Oscar nominations...??? I just hope they don't keep us waiting TOO long!
susank2 Posted - October 20 2007 : 8:22:28 PM
So is there a definite release date yet for TWBB? I may actually have to get to the theater to see this one.

After seeing Kingdom of Heaven, my dad said that when he was watching it, he thought he had seen the movie before. I said "really?" and he said "Yeah, it was called Troy". I thought that was funny.

I was visiting DD-L.net earlier this evening & ran across this review of DD-L's new movie "There Will Be Blood":

Another review that was posted on Cigs & Red Vines:

A tough-minded exhibition guy from another continent says that “‘awesome’ is the only word I can think of to describe Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood,” which he saw yesterday.

“As someone who fell giddily for Boogie Nights only to be frustrated by the excesses of Magnolia and disappointed in many of the indulgences of Punch Drunk Love, this new film does more than restore PTA’s stature as one of the most exciting American filmmakers — it puts him in the leagues of the masters.

“Blood is two hours and 45 minutes of cinematic heroin. It’s a frightening, overwhelming, punch-to-the-gut work — as strong as anything that John Huston or Stanley Kubrick ever made.

“Too much will be written and said about the accomplishments of Daniel Day Lewis’s performance to start drooling here. Let’s just say that the Best Actor Oscar is his to lose, not that I imagine he’d care. Paul Dano, in a difficult role, matches him scene for scene — the breakout performance of the year. And Jonny Greenwood’s score is still giving me chills.

“The film is probably too grim and narratively uncompromising to break out commercially beyond the realms of where Jesse James aspires (and may not reach). But it deserves to, and will, do better than that film and certainly is more than just an actor’s showcase in the vein of Last King of Scotland. $20 t0 $30 million is possible, assuming the big awards come through? For my money Day-Lewis pushes the potential of the film beyond the art milieu.

“Despite these minor flaws, this is a cinematic and artistic experience that few other American films have delivered in recent memory."

I'm really looking forward to seeing Daniel on the big screen again! What a great Christmas present!!!

Orlando's cute, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't seem to act so much as stand around and look pretty. My sister calls him "the master of the overly dramatic look."

I like that phrase, although it could be applied to quite a few actors.

Love,
Kay

The guy who played "Guy" in KoH is named Marton Czokas (from Czechoslovakia, or one of those eastern European countries) ... say it with a "g" sound, not a "j" sound, "the guy who played Gee" ... see if you can say that 5 times without biting your tongue! He also played in Aeon Flux and The Great Raid as well as [TAA DAA] The Lord of the Rings! As an elf! He played Celeborn, Galadriel's husband.

Not much for Orlando either but if you give him long blond hair and pointy ears again, that'll do it for me! (don't forget the bow and arrows) Oops, I'm so off topic, my bad, sorry!

Right you are, Diane B! There aren't many actors I'd trust with the role of a Texas prospector---since many, I think, would tend toward the ridiculous---but DDL's will be excellent, I know. This movie is on my "must see" list now.

The Arn movie I'll have to see as well. My curiosity has been piqued by the pics on the film's website. I think Obi has it right when he says this movie looks "interesting." And did anyone else notice that half the Skarsgards in Sweden must be in this movie? I counted at least four on the cast list, all from the family of "Bootstrap Bill" Stellan Skarsgard. As an added bonus, Mads Mikkelson, Casino Royale's Le Chiffre plays the King of Denmark.

Oh, and to answer your question, Kaylynn:
quote:

Orlando Bloom....annoying???? Hmmmm, there are alot of adjectives that I could link to Orlando's name, but annoying just doesn't come to mind. Why is he annoying to you Red?

Orlando's cute, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't seem to act so much as stand around and look pretty. My sister calls him "the master of the overly dramatic look." His best role, in my opinion, was Legolas (I think because I can picture him as a willowy elf much better than, say, a seasoned crusader). And even his cuteness is usually upstaged by one of his costars: hello-o-o-o, Johnny Depp, Eric Bana, and that guy who played "Guy" in Kingdom of Heaven! But, like I said, that's just my opinion. Not trying to dissuade anyone else from liking Orlando.

Actually, "There Will Be Blood" is scheduled for limited release in the U.S. later in 2007 (sometime in or after October, I believe). IMBF describes the movie as a "story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas prospector (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early days of the business." There is already a lot of "buzz" in the film industry about Oscar nominations - including a nomination for Daniel's role - and below is something I saw on dd-l.net regarding a short clip on YouTube from TWBB:

"That is amazing! If the rest of the film is that good, it has OSCAR written all over it. I can't wait to see it.

BTW, I think this link will work to the it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYW2ltW5SPo

Those on the Board who know and/or remember me are aware of the fact that I am totally awestruck and blown away by Daniel & his ability to totally immerse himself in his movie roles - which are too few and far between! However, when he DOES appear onscreen, the transformation from one role to the next is so complete as to make the man almost unrecognizable as an individual. I can think of no other actor in this day & age who can match Daniel's performances in this way & personally, I cannot WAIT for the release of "There Will Be Blood" - WHAT AN ADVEN'CHA to once again see our beloved DD-L on the BIG SCREEN!

Thanks Red, gives us some good movies to look forward to.
Kaylynn44 Posted - July 24 2007 : 7:05:03 PM
This last movie looks suspiciously similar to Kingdom of Heaven, except without the ever-annoying Orlando Bloom. (Sorry, just my opinion.

Orlando Bloom....annoying???? Hmmmm, there are alot of adjectives that I could link to Orlando's name, but annoying just doesn't come to mind.
Why is he annoying to you Red? I guess that there doesn't have to be a reason. There are several actors that I turn the channel if I see them on my television, and my number one annoying actor is Steven Seagal. He just ANNOYS me.
Now, before I GWOT (Go Way Off Topic) Thanks for all of the info on the upcoming movies. I will look out for them.

Love,
Kay
