Posted - June 11 2008 : 12:04:41 PM I'm a little late seeing this one but I finally saw it over this past weekend. Good movie. I wasn't too thrilled that there was so much singing but that's what you get with a musical. Great story though. Johnny Depp didn't do too bad a job singing. Was actually pretty good. All in all, good movie to see. (That's if you like blood and gore) |

Posted - February 07 2008 : 06:11:54 AM I saw this recently (it was at the cinemas later here in England than in US) FANTASTIC! I loved it! I rushed out afterwards and bought the soundtrack and it's nearly been played as much as my LOTM soundtrack haha
I loved it so much that I insisted my birthday this year had to be fancy dress just so I can dress up as Mrs Lovett |

For anyone interested you can see Judge Turpin's death scene in Sweeney Todd over on Youtube and there are other interesting clips as well. Do not view if you plan on going to see this movie as it will spoil it for you. Enjoy but be warned...not for the faint of heart.....there will be blood. |

Posted - January 02 2008 : 8:06:35 PM I just saw this movie Saturday night. I went because I like Johnny Depp and, I was curious to see how much of the true story of Sweeny Todd they used. (Not very much as it turned out. They portrayed Todd as a victim himself. Which wasn't true.)
I liked the look of the movie. You really felt like you were in old London town. The clothes were great too. I can see this film winning awards. The singing was excellent, but I found the songs to be too simple and monotonous. You won't leave the theater singing any of them like songs from "West Side Story", or "Grease", or "Camelot". Violent - yes. I closed my eyes for all the murders. I just had to hear the ugly sounds. Yuck... Johnny's makeup and lack of dialog reminded me of "Edward Scissorhands". He doesn't say a whole lot. Still good though.
I also saw "The waterhorse". It is well done. Great effects. Nice story. Good for the whole family... That's all my reviews for now... Donna... |

I had a hard time with the singing dialogue too. I'm less than fond of musicals--My Fair Lady and Chicago are the only ones I actually enjoy--but I do love me some Johnny Depp. I was curious to see him in a musical, but the singing was rather tedious at first. The movie got better after there was more talking, less singing, and overall I liked it. |

Posted - December 30 2007 : 10:24:16 AM Funny that because the trailer that ran on tv around my neck of the woods clearly show it as a "musical" with JD singing. It was quite clear that it was a musical. I guess your poor son did not know that going in. My son had wanted to see it but when I told him it was a musical he decided it was not for him. |

Posted - December 29 2007 : 7:42:49 PM Yes, but funny how it's not advertised as a musical....just as the new one, "P.S. I love you" changed from the way it was advertised. The first I saw of it was that the PS came from a letter sent to the Hillery Swank character after the death of the "love of her life'.. Oh .. noooo.. too dreery... gotta promote it better.. make it a "Romantic Comedy"..... |

Well let's see it was a MUSICAL. If you don't like singing dialog it might be a great idea to avoid musicals altogether
Anyone I know both male and female who have gone to see this, just loved it and many, including myself, have already seen it at least twice. To each his own I guess. |

Posted - December 29 2007 : 3:22:47 PM So anyone else seen this yet? I just went again yesterday with my 16 year old daughter. She really wanted to see it and despite looking 18 or 19 they do card them so she could not get in without mama. At least we got to spend time "together". Lots of teens with one parent there at our showing. One time they don't mind going someplace with mom or dad. I enjoyed it even more the second viewing and have those wonderful songs stuck in my head. Now I have to get the soundtrack.... |

Posted - December 23 2007 : 11:58:13 AM Well I don't feel the need for "Care Bears" Red. I loved all the slitting of throats and blood spurting action . Tim Burton is a genius and this movie was so different and dark and wonderfully done. Kudos to Mr Burton for a great job
My hubby loved this as well but definitely would never let anyone near his throat with one of those "cut-throat razors" especially Mr Todd I would love to discuss in more detail but don't wish to spoil for those who may still be going to see this "masterpiece". The grizzly deaths were "fantasticly" done |

Posted - December 22 2007 : 9:40:16 PM Hey! I just got back from seeing this movie too. I agree that the movie is amazingly done, and I also thought that the day-dreaming scene was hilarious. Great job singing by all cast. Now, as for the graphic violence. . . .
OMG. Definitely DON'T go see this movie if you think up-close shots of blood spurting from freshly slit throats may disturb you. The murder scenes are VERY graphic and over the top--in the usual, exaggerated Tim Burton fashion--and frequently repeated. Yeesh. I feel like I need to go watch some Care Bears or Rainbow Brite now, something to give me a warm fuzzy feeling before I go to bed. My hubby said the movie was great, but he's never getting his hair cut again. And he probably won't shave for weeks!

Posted - December 22 2007 : 5:34:52 PM I just got back from seeing this movie and all I can say is WOW. Excellent job by all concerned Yes, yes I know what you are all thinking, I would like this anyway because of Alan but not so. If it "stank" I would say so but not the case here. This movie is amazing and the singing is brilliant by all the actors. Johnny and Alan do a duet called "Pretty Women" and I so loved that and Helena Bonham Carter was perfectly cast as Mrs Lovett. There is a scene where she is "day-dreaming" about her and Sweeney and what could lay ahead for them and it is so funny LOL. I am not a "musical fan" but this one I loved (not your typical musical, far from it) but be warned there is a lot of graphic "throat slitting" and spurting blood.
I highly recommend it to fans of Johnny, Helena or sigh...Alan but if you do not like "graphic violence" then avoid it. It was funny at times, something I did not expect and it sure put me in the humour for a "meat pie" just not one of Mrs Lovett's
GO SEE IT |

I think Johnny's voice is not powerful or deep enough for this role. When he sings, he does not sound menacing enough. He may be more suited for the type of music he performed in his younger days. |

Posted - November 25 2007 : 4:04:16 PM I couldn't pull the trailer up...(darned dial-up), but did get to see it on TV as well the last couple of days! It reminds me of "Sleepy Hollow". I'm looking forward to adding it to my collection of Burton films. |

Posted - October 24 2007 : 09:21:13 AM Here is a good description of the up-coming movie from over on the Sweeney Todd boards.
SPOILER-FREE REVIEW (general impressions and basics): I'm sure you've heard much of this already but:
-They said this preview is NOT finished - Burton has 5 weeks of "mixing" left to do. (But it looked mostly finished to me.) -I timed it: it was 1 hr 50 mins, not including end credits (they only showed the front credits). -Full-throttle musical – believe it or not, you don’t really miss the things that are missing. It’s almost more of a musical than the stage musical! When they sing they REALLY sing, and I might be exaggerating, but it seemed like over 80% sung. The music is very powerful throughout. Depp is excellent. Carter has a strong accent (I think it works). Anthony and Tobias almost steal the show. Turpin, Beadle, and Pirelli all seem PERFECT. -Amazingly faithful to the musical - much of it is word-for-word the same, with a few plot deviations and many minor changes. -About 60 people in the audience, with very positive reactions (a few negative) – but the audience isn’t a “random sample”. -Very disturbingly violent and gory – it’s actually a “musical-horror” movie. We knew it would be a unique film, but I would say that it's radically unique because it’s also *hilarious*. Sure to get widely varying reviews.

Posted - October 21 2007 : 11:16:54 AM I can't decide if I want to go and see this one or not. Hmmmmm....
It is based upon a very successful Broadway musical of the same name, written by Stephen Sondheim back in the 70s or 80s. It was a very different sort of musical, as you can well imagine from the story line. It was a far cry from the sunshine and roses, happy-ending types of musicals that were popular up to that point. And while still very "dark" and brooding, and you definitely got the point of what was going on, it wasn't as openly violent as this movie appears to be.
I see that Johnny Depp sings at least one song in the movie, and the genre is listed as a musical, but I can't find out if they are using all of the original songs from the Broadway musical, or if the focus is less on the music and more on the violent story.
Hmmmmm... still thinking about this one...... |
