Posted - January 14 2008 : 12:32:19 PM Well, we didn't get to watch them on TV, but the Golden Globes have been awarded.
Daniel Day Lewis won Best Actor in a drama for "There Will Be Blood." Johnny Depp won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for "Sweeney Todd." Best movie drama was "Atonement" with Keira Knightely, although she did not win best actress. Best movie musical or comedy was "Sweeney Todd."
Now, let's see what the Oscars do... |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 5:01:53 PM Well I certainly enjoyed it Obes and I do enjoy seeing my former "neighbor" Liam Neeson in any movie. |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 11:55:47 AM Hey Irish! Did'juh see that, did'juh? Diane said I'm reasonable!! Of course, this is the woman who wants to go to the mudpit.
As far as GONY:
DDL -- Guilty of over-acting! Leonardo -- Guilty of not acting! Cameron -- A workmanlike performance IIRC. Liam Neeson -- Quai Gon Gin gets gorked again.
To paraphrase: "Trust an Irishman to bring a knife to a gunfight." This had the correct look, but was SO historically inaccurate, especially the Civil War scenes. Another dog from Martin Scorsese. Did he ever get anything right before The Departed? |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 09:21:23 AM Hey Obes I liked GONY very much. Have to disagree with you on that one but then again I love to disagree with you. |

Posted - January 15 2008 : 7:24:54 PM Hi Obi,
I obviously misunderstood you & I apologize.
I agree with your comments about the movie industry & their self-serving strategies for chasing the all-mighty Oscar by having late & limited releases of their films - it drive me nuts!!!
And, like you, I also dont' have much use for the Oscars. I respect the SAG awards much more. Taken as a whole, the Oscars are often given without much rhyme or reason, rather than basing the awards on the merit of the performance of actors/actresses and/or the quality of their films.
Can't say that I totally disagree with your assessment of movie critics, either...
As for GONY: taken as a whole, I must admit that it's not among my favorite films of all times. The onscreen "relationship" between Decaprio & Diaz never rang true for me & quite honestly, if it weren't for Daniel's role in the film, I would likely have never gone to see it in the theater nor purchased the DVD.
That said, you do seem to be a reasonable fellow who still likes to have a little fun...so maybe we could still meet up so that I can send you for a roll in ye old mud pit! |

Posted - January 15 2008 : 3:39:57 PM Where was it that I bashed DDL??? I was bashing movie companies strategy of waiting till late December, then release a flick in NY & LA only, just to make their movie eligible for those stoopid oscars. Understand this, I hate the oscars! That's just the movie industry rewarding itself! That's just complete . As for those glowing reviews, (to paraphrase) I wouldn't give a pinch of owl dung for movie reviews. I thought it was pretty obvious that the 1st prerequisite of being a movie critic is not knowing anything at all about what makes up a good movie.
Oh yeah, I did bash GONY, but I'll waste no more words now on that garbage. |

Yeah, recently I saw a trailer for TWBB -- funny, Deedle looked and sounded exactly like that character he played in GONY (a real dog of a flick, if you ask me)...that's more than passing strange.
OK, Obi - best watch your step here: that's my man Daniel Day-Lewis you're bashing!
And before you assume that "you're only defending him because you've become infatuated with him" (which I definitely AM, but that is a discussion for another time!) I would remind you that Daniel has already won numerous other awards for this role, including awards from New York Film Critics, LA Film Critics, National Film Critics, and Broadcasters Film Critics. He is also nominated for a SAG award for his performance in TWBB...OH, and there's that OTHER little award that he's nominated for this year, um, what's it called...??? OH, YEAH, an OSCAR - that's it!!!
In addition, Obi, there are many reviews of this movie circulating out there, all of which have nothing but the highest praise for Daniel's performance; and which compare this movie to several other epic films such as Giant, Chinatown, and Citizen Kane. Below are links to reviews from Times Magazine and Rolling Stone, just to get you started:

Needless to say, just as soon as TWBB is out in wide release, I will be the first in line for tickets!
And in the meantime...yours truly, Rattlesnake Woman, will be right here in Mohicanland, cheering Daniel on & just waiting to strike at those sorely in need of a trip to ye old mud pit!!! (sorry, couldn't find a Rattlesnake in the Smileys List!) |
