Posted - January 16 2008 : 08:25:23 AM I thought part 2 was much better than part 1. The Val Kilmer part in the hole went on a little long, but overall I enjoyed it much more. |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 4:58:12 PM You can have more Blackie if you watch Lonesome Dove the next one in the series and if you have not seen it before then you are in for a real "treat". Heck, even if you have seen it years ago it is still a "treat". You can purchase "Lonesome Dove" and "Dead Man's Walk" both excellent movies at Wal-Mart cheaply enough.
Obi, I am so glad that TLJ played Call and Duval Gus otherwise it just would not have worked. Can't imagine them in each others role. |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 2:02:37 PM Well, I do agree that the third part was the best. Didn't really care too much for the ending but it leaves you wanting more. All in all I guess it wasn't too bad of a series. Could have done a few things differently. |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 12:27:40 PM I thought that the last episode was definitely the best of the three. The ending certainly had a Larry McMurtryish feel.
I felt that Steve Zahn did an excellent job as Gus & that Karl Urban was vastly improved over the previous two chapters. Linda Cardellini had the most outstanding performance as Clara.
Buffalo Hump was just pathetic throughout the whole mini-series, thought Wes did pretty darned good in spite of the lousy part. As for Blue Duck's Adam Beach...well...he had a great sneer! Then there was Famous Shoes (David Midthunder)... does the term "wooden Indian" ring a bell?
Did anyone else notice that our heroes wore new hats in this last episode? Gus' hat is definitely evolving into the true, well-known "Gus" style. Call's had OTOH, had hardly changed at all (just a wider ribbon around the crown). This is sort of a metaphor for the two characters, as well. BTW, I really really like Gus' first hat! "I gotta get me one of these!"
Be that as it may, it IS a western, and there's just aren't enough of them...
I just remembered: I had read Lonesome Dove long before the mini-series was made...when I first read about the upcoming production and that the two lead characters would be played by Tommie Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, I assumed that TLJ would play Gus & RD would play Call! Wouldn't that have been something? |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 12:23:30 PM Well, the whole series had some flaws, for sure, but all-in-all, I enjoyed it.
I still think that Val Kilmer absolutely stole the whole show with his portrayal of Capt. Scull, especially the semi-mad Scull after his experience in the pit. That is genius writing! The deadly rattlesnakes didn't bother him, but the fleas drove him mad. Genius.
What a poignant ending. Poor, orphaned little Newt watching and waiting for "the boys", and the father who would never claim him, to return. |

Posted - January 17 2008 : 10:52:50 AM Well Part Three was the best so far and I loved the little guy who played Newt. Just so cute and adorable. I still think Gus and Woodrow were mis-cast but Part 3 was at least watchable. I feel Wes and Adam were not used to their full potential in this one which is too bad. Not their faults just the script. Eric Schweig as the Hump was very terrifying but Wes, supposedly older Hump, did not come across as "terrifying" at all. Just my opinion though. |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 5:44:30 PM Never saw LOTR any of them. Well watched a bit with my hubby once and found it boring.
Anyone else think Famous Shoes could be Wes's son as kind of looks like him? Nice pics Blackie. |

He was in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but only the 2nd and 3rd installment. I thought he was good in that and I actually like him as Call much better than I like Steve Zahn as Gus. |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 12:37:19 PM I think Comanche Moon was the best thing in it's time slot. For a made for TV movie and the fact that it's the 3rd one in the series to be produced I think they did an excellent job. How many series can muster 3 quality productions? I'm sure the budget wasn't too large. If there was more prime-time western action like this I would be extremely happy. This beats the pants off of any of the reality tv that was on last night. |

I've seen him in a few things before this (Pathfinder). He's an average actor. But he sure does have a purdy face! (Sorry folks!) |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 11:57:01 AM Totally agree with you on this one Irish. Terrible casting and bad scripting. But at least I have Karl Urban to look at, as long as he doesn't open his mouth. HA! |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 11:54:18 AM Just another thought on "Comanche Moon". I own all the other movies in the series "Dead Man's Walk","Lonesome Dove", "Return to Lonesome Dove" and "Streets of Laredo" and I consider them all to be excellent so I eagerly anticipated that this one would be excellent too. Boy was I ever wrong. Bad casting and bad acting IMO. |

Posted - January 16 2008 : 09:03:49 AM I have the opposite opinion susank. I was not overjoyed with Part 1 but Part 2 really was verging on boring. This whole mini-series is so disappointing and I think it is largely due to the bad casting of Call and MacCrae. They also changed things from the book such as Goyeto the "skinner" was killed by Ahumado, if memory serves me correctly and Scull has his eyelids cut off. Also Ahumado was "black" in the book whereas this Ahumado is clearly Mexican not black and I believe his part was poorly cast as Ahumado is supposed to be so terrible and everyone is afraid to cross his path. This guy did not come across as ferocious or much of a killer. The only woman in the whole saga with any "spunk" is Clara who stands up to the men and does not let them bully her around. Poor Pearl, I knew what was coming but still, the way men wanted nothing to do with their wives because they had been violated by the Indians(through no fault of their own)was just awful. The way it was back then but still and then Bill goes and hangs himself. Instead of sticking by his wife but at least they kept true to the book.
Another thing is Buffalo Hump and Call and MacCrae are all supposed to be around the same age. Well not in this one, the Hump is definitely older. First book they are young like 20ish and this one perhaps in thirties and the last Lonesome Dove, well much older. Just lots of inaccuracies.
Geeze, not sure about Part 3 tonight as it will be even worse than the first two parts. Each one keeps going "downhill" in a big way. Even the Indians in this disappoint from Famous Shoes and his bad acting (looks like a young Wes I think)and we barely see Blue Duck and even Wes does not have much chance to shine as Buffalo Hump (scripts fault not his). Beginning to think Eric Schweig did the right thing in turning down the role in the first place for whatever reason. Probably saw what a stinker this would be. |
