My list doesn't include Uncas only because his hair is perfect in every scene!:) Best hair moments:

Hawkeye striding about the fort before the kiss. The combination of his hair, long rifle- ahem!, and ultra confident swagger made my jaw drop, and provoked more than a few female gasps!:)

After the kiss, Cora is resting in Hawkeye's arms with her hair falling about her waist. I think they more than kissed, don't you?:)

Hawkeye's hair whenever he runs through the forrest

Alice on cliff before she jumps. I loved the slo-mo of her hair blowing across her face

Hawkeye entering the Huron village. He gets knocked over by a Huron, and when he gets up his hair falls very artistically about his face- swoon, drool, pant!:) He looked beautiful (not merely handsome) in that moment

Cora on the promontary. While Hawkeye and Chingacook are mourning Uncas, there's a shot of Cora with her hair blowing freely in the wind. She looks so beautiful, and all traces of the English "lady" are gone. There's a woman who gives the impression that she can hack a living out of the wilderness, with her own two hands. She looks like a fitting mate for Hawkeye.

Lol, I agree, his hair does get in the way sometimes. Let's see....I think Duncan's wig came off during the Massacre scene, didn't it?
Either way, his hair is only messy towards the end. =P
Stephanie Posted - February 21 2005 : 4:11:53 PM
Poor Duncan never gets mentioned in these talks about favorite hair scenes, and neither does Col. Munro. Poor fellows! And what about the Huron Sachem? Great hair!
But I have to agree with most, aside from Uncas' shampoo-commercial shine, Alice has the best hair scenes.
Hawkeye's hair is a mess, if you ask me. Does nothing for me! (dodging from all the DDL fans)

I think, most of all, I like when Alice jumps off and her hair's blowing in the wind. (No, I don't like that she jumped off.

he's an abenaki, in the movie, the abenakis pretty consistantly have the ear to ear forward shaved, rest loose style... and often ornate facial tatoos... nice earing too...
a 'directors call' put all 'good' indians with full heads of hair and 'bad' indians with somewhat shaved heads - not entirely accurate...
magua's hair, head and arm tatoos are largely based on the benjamen west painting 'the death of wolfe'.. you never see him without leggings, so no leg work is visable..
missing is the mohawk pattern near his ear and the bear paw on his shoulder
an image of that painting is at:
http://www.artchive.com/artchive/W/west/death_of_wolfe.jpg.html
tatoos are a little fuzzy there, hard to find a good clear detail of that one
Lurking Huron2313 Posted - February 11 2005 : 11:18:16 PM
Come on guys... Magua is the most impressive looking character in the entire film....his hair wins with the red hair tuft and braids in the battle scene after the fort ...but the Ottawa who keeps the Frenchman out of the burial area and his buddies have cool hair and the Osage or Abnaki who is talking with Montcolm before Magua enters has a nice do....
wlogwihlas Posted - January 13 2005 : 10:33:55 AM
that seen after hawkeye and cora get down and dirty, when they have the sun dropping in the background. thats nice.

Hmmmm best hair scene. I would have to say Alice when she gets up so Duncan and Cora can talk. For someone who has been sleeping she shows no sign of bed head! Some people have it made I swear!!!! Hee hee!
UncasLover13 Posted - May 17 2004 : 9:18:00 PM
Definitely when Alice is about to jump off the cliff. She looks gorgeous, but her hair just completes it. I love the look of it; how it's messy and beautiful at the same time, you know what I mean?
Lurking Huron3087 Posted - May 17 2004 : 10:34:35 AM
nice shot! It's pretty funny though..usually the heroines' hair are always gloriously in place or perfectly tousled in movies..no matter what they do..run jump swim.... but in LOTM... cora and alice neat coiffs actually get undone...and though they still look pretty gd...it's seriously messy and actually sorta greasy.. the only hair that stayed perfect and in place was Uncas and Ching...which is kinda unusual 'cos it's usually the ladies' who are like that..
hmm..my personal faves of Uncas is when he first jumps into the canoe..he has this trand of loose fringe..likewise when he runs up the cliffs after alice the last part

I am a sucker for long black hair on men. I like both Uncas's and Hawkeye's hair in this scene, especially Uncas.... yummy!

Hello Alikws,

Thanks for your info on bear grease. I actually know nothing about the properties or uses of bear grease, but have been attempting (not very successfully!) to tease Scott about it off and on for a while. It all began on another thread when someone asked a question about a natural, 18th century-style hair dressing to be used for a white woman. As I said way back then... if it's good enough for a Native American woman, it's good enough for me.

Sorry about the misinformation, and thanks for setting the old gal straight!

alikws Posted - April 21 2004 : 3:45:25 PM
bear grease has a unique, not offensive odor... dogs instinctivly are spooked by it, and it does little to keep the mosquitos at bay, although it and red ochre make you look good [cut to scene at reenactment, soon before the spectator battle, everyone passing mirrors &c around, painting as a group, spectators overcoming spook factor and creeping closer for a better look]... and it does shine hair up a bit and keeps it out of your face

on hair, the native styles [the ear to ear on the abenakis &c] are pretty much on the mark... such is common at reenactments, starting to be seen more regular in the powwow world...

you're right, scott... magua doe have a nice hair-do... red feather and all :)

I actually have never smelled bear grease. But I have smelled old, rancid fat/grease from other animals and it is not pleasant. Besides, I figure if bear grease will repel mosquitoes, it will repel me! Think I'll stick with the Rosemary Oil. Much more pleasant... and still brings out the "natural sheen."

(You'll never convince me, Scott! )

Not as smelly as bear grease, I'll wager!

(Hi, Scott! )

Now, Wilderness Woman. You know very well bear grease has a light, sweet scent and is just the thing for bringing out the natural sheen.

That's why it was so highly prized by both Native Americans and settlers as a hair dressing.

Plus it was the lubricant of choice for their firelocks.

It was in fact so highly prized that it was being counterfeited by commercial interests in the nineteenth century.

Now, what surprises me is that no one has mentioned Magua.

His 'do' far surpasses that of anyone else in the film.

generally, i like natty's hair...
but in the scene right before the kiss, its all poofy (he probably just washed it, my friend has the same kind of hair and its always like that right after she washes it.)
he reminds me of a cocker spaaniel then...

Among the group of civilians leaving the surrendered fort is a young mother carrying her child. The mother's hair gleams gloriously in the sun.

Hmm..when u said mentioned Uncas 's hair was perfect..i watched LOTM to see whether his hair ever looked bad (THough I am a huge fan of eric..)..and sadly....NO! hE always looks great....bout the others..
definitely..alice before she jumped..and the scene when the british was getting trounced by the indians..alice was backing away in horror as she looked at the british getting killed..oh and the Alexandria cameron's little son..his hair is gorgeous...

I know this is a late posting but I just have been back to the board and have to throw in my "hair two cents" as the topic of DDL's HAIR in LOTM has, of course, always been near the top with me:
I agree with the aforementioned votes for his hair in the fortress where he's wandering around in the firelight/leading up the love scene and yes, when he's walking into the Huron village. At that moment he is literally one of the most beautiful beings that has ever existed.
Excuse the exaggeration but...
sigh...

Mmm, dont think Bear grease is easily available in rural England but the Rosemary oil sounds good - I just read the other hair thread! I hear beer and mayonaise can be good too (a bit smelly though).

Bear grease!

.... or is that Rosemary Oil?
Ellie Posted - February 25 2003 : 07:21:33 AM
My favourite femaile hair scene is in the surgery, when Hawkeye is looking at Cora before he walks out and she is gazing back at him, her hair is tied back but it has a few loose strands falling around her face. My favourite male hair scene is at the beginning at the cabins when the English officer is trying to enlist the colonial malitia - Hawkey is stood with his rifle propping up his arm and his hair is tied back, it shows off his beautiful face to perfection.

p.s. I have often wondered what conditioner Uncas uses to get that fabulous shine!

My favorite hair scene has to be the one you mentioned about how when Alice is about to jump and her hair goes in slow-mo across her face. Thats the one in my Book. mohicanwarrior
