Can anyone recommend a good coffee table book about the French and Indian War? Something big, hardcover, lots of maps, and filled with a ton of colorful illustrations. I've seen a lot of softcover books with a few black and white photos but I need pictures!

In their latest catalog the Wennawoods people offer a new book entitled Empires Collide: The French & Indian War 1754-63, edited by Ruth Sheppard, and the ad begins: "You wanted a great book with color pictures of the F&I war--this is it!" 272 pages, hundreds of color and b/w photos, drawings, maps and paintings. I don't know if Susquesus still checks in here, but maybe this is the kind of book he had in mind. See www.wennawoods.com -- it's described on the first page of the bookstore section of the website.

I am currently reading Crucible of War by Fred Anderson. Lots of maps and pictures, none in color (except the cover). It's on my coffee table!

If you can find a copy of it, there's an old American Heritage Junior Library book called "The French and Indian Wars", by Francis Russell. It's 8 1/2" x 11" format, profusely illustrated, and with a well written text (back when they didn't "write down" to young folks so much). It's probably the closest thing there is to a true "coffee table" book on the F&I War.

That's very exciting. I have another volume from the American Heritage Junior Library, "Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill". One of my absolute favorites while growing up. My mom bought it for me in Boston while visiting for a wedding. I've flipped through it within the last few weeks, still an impressive book.

Lots of maps. Lots of pictures.

The 'PBS Folks', who are engaged in their own F&IW 250th thing("The War That Made America", aka "The War For Empire"), have allegedly contracted both Dr. Fred Anderson (author of "The Crucible of War") and renown eastern frontier artist Robert Griffing to do a 'coffee table book' (their words) that will compliment the PBS movie venture on the same subject. Both are slated for release, sometime in 2005.

Susquesus,
I don't know how many pictures or maps that it has in it, but I know that "The French and Indian War 1754-1763: The Imperial Struggle for North America" comes in hardback and would make a great coffee table book.
