Weapon systems bearing the names Gatling, Nordenfelt, Gardner and Mitrailleuse were the rapid-fire support systems that predate the Maxim Gun of 1887 (the original automatic machine gun). These weapons, used as support to infantry and/or artillery, were meant to augment the disparity in numbers between European and Native combatants. Your Most Humble Servant,
