At one of the Gatherings, I believe it was 2006, there was a Cherokee for Qualla present at the French Broad Rifles site, and I have been trying to remember his name. Could it have been Bo Taylor?

Thanks. I will be on the lookout for her.

Bo would be a good one to ask, but you might also look for Dr. Barbara Duncan at the museum as well.

"why is it that commanders like Webb and Grant can prove themselves totally worthless and still get promoted?"
I'm so glad that *never* happens these days. ;-)

Just a little more on why I was looking for Bo Taylor. I want a knowledgeable contact in Qualla who can point me in the right direction. I am looking for the site of a battle fought in 1760 and again in 1761. It is near Franklin, NC and, as history says, between Etchoe and Tessuntee Old Fields. I figure it would be better to talk with someone who has done research than some local historical society. The 250th anniversary of the battle will be next June 27. It was a major victory for the Cherokee. They defeated two regiments of Montgomery's Highlanders and continued the siege of Fort Loudoun, which surrendered in August. But the following year, and at the same spot, the Cherokee were defeated by Grant. It would really be great if something was done to commemorate these two battles.

And speaking of Grant, why is it that commanders like Webb and Grant can prove themselves totally worthless and still get promoted? I was just reading about Grant at Fort Duquesne. Sent to reconnoiter the area, he advanced with bagpipes playing and subsequently got his rear end kicked and a third of his men killed. Plus himself captured. Then he tried to blame it on a Major Lewis. To quote: "When captured he sent a letter explaining that the responsibility for the defeat was with Virginian Major Andrew Lewis. The letter was captured and brought to Major Lewis who was also a captive at Fort Pitt. Major Lewis challenged Grant to a duel which Grant refused. Major Lewis then spat upon Grant." So they promote him and put him in charge of the 1761 expedition against the Cherokee.

Thanks. I need to make a trip to Qualla soon.

You were about a week late on that visit to Fort Loudoun. You missed the Trade Faire.

Hi! Sorry Fitz. Just got home from a mini-Gathering with Jayne, Karen, Gadget Girl and others. In fact, we visited Fort Loudon and thought of you. You are correct, the Cherokee gentleman was Bo Taylor. He can usually be found around the Cherokee Museum.

Where's the smurf when you need her?

Missed that one, Fitz. Don't know the answer. Sorry ...
