Edward Hand was one of George Washington's brigade and division commanders and also served as his last Adjutant General. Hand served in many of the Revolution's pivotal battles and other events, including the winter at Valley Forge. Once the Revolution was over, he retired to his home near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and built this charming residence. A native Scot, he was also a physician, and for a time used a room in the home as his office.

Following the death of Hand in the early 1800's, the house passed through the ownership of several heirs, before becoming the office of a local Lancaster quarry ( if I remember right! ); this ignominious use actually saved it from alteration, including wiring for electricity, or destruction until it could be rescued as a house museum. One room has been left in its unrestored state for comparison, and is very interesting, retaining as it does some of its nineteenth-century paint

Today the house is preserved and furnished throughout with period furniture and a very few family belongings. It's a little hard to find, poorly marked on a country lane in southern Lancaster, surrounded by land that once formed part of the estate, now a County Park.

Edit: This post has largely been to test the newly reset program; it appears to work well enough that I look forward to sharing more of my recent trip ( last August ) to the Maryland-Pennsylvania area! |
