The Spencer Tracy classic "Northwest Passage" about the exploits of Rogers Rangers will air on Turner Classic Movies this Saturday at 10:30am CST. If you haven't seen this and you're a F&I war junkie(you should be ashamed), you should definitely make a point of checking this out.

| Aye! One of the Classics!! Gotta catch it again.......thanks, Susquesus, for the heads up. |

| Better yet, read the book! It's only about 1,000 pages. I read it when I was 13, right after LOTM was in the theaters. I distinctly remember a tavern scene from the beginning of the book, I had never tasted hot-buttered-rum or lobster, but in my mind I sure could taste it. Roberts was an amazing author. |

| I purchased this video a while back for my collection and I enjoy it quite a lot. I think my favorite scene is the river crossing. |

| would like to see a more historicly acurate version of this one... the event this movie was based on would work without too much embelishments... this one was filmed in the early days of technicolor, so the peter-pan like uniforms planned to be almost camoflaged were tweaked in post production for eye popping color... the muskets were reworked trapdoor springfields with strange stocks and massive bands distantly resembling '77 charlivilles, modified to fire blanks... the flint jaws and flint were cast brass, braised to the springfield hammers, with cast brass frizzens... strange... i've seen one of them... |

| Woof! I'm cutting it close here. I gave up cable about a year ago, however, since I'm now living alone and another Minnesota winter is about to set in I freaked out and decided to get myself hooked up again. "Northwest Passage" was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Once I saw it listed I called the folks at Comcast cable and made an appointment. It starts at 10:30 and the cable man will be here between 9 and 11. Keep your fingers crossed for me. With luck I'll be enjoying a classic film over a hot cup of coffee saturday morning. |

Thankeee, the "Mad Hermit" bit was my own. It's been so long since I've seen "Northwest Passage" that I didn't realize that it starred Walter Brennan as Hunk Marriner, Langdon's reluctant partner. Brennan plays one of my all time Western characters in John Wayne's "Rio Bravo"- Stumpy the wily old crippled deputy. I LOVE his goofy laugh! (and his toothless grin!) |

Speaking of hermits (and totally off the orginal topic...!)...
The recent public TV production of "Regency Party" included an Estate Hermit as one of the characters. And one of the girls (who was supposed to find a good husband) fell for the hermit!

Surprisingly, I have never watched it. I will shortly, though. Fortunately, I managed to find a VHS copy, since it has never been released on DVD!! |

Well, I watched it today...not too bad actually, especially for a movie that's old enough to be drawing Social Security! Spencer Tracy was awesome, between the fanatical expression in his eyes and his dispair at finding no-one at Ft. Wentworth.
Now for the fun part: picking out all the junk! Let's see, where to start...there's the one-sided sentiment of the evil, savage Indians...the idiotic portrayal of Amherst as an ancient, doddering fool who actually liked the provincials...Iroquoi played by flabby white guys...those cutsey costumes worn by the Rangers...and the guns, oh yess my preciouss!! 2 "Brown Bess" muskets (carried by Langdon & Hunk) and a bazillion trapdoor Springfields!...you'd think this was "Birth of A Nation."
By and large, tho, it was kind of a neat flick, and yes, I will watch it again...hopefully it'll be released on DVD. My favorite scene probably, was watching the tension in the Rangers as they waited to attack St. Francis.
OOPS, almost forgot: rubber bayonets!! |

| Oh yeah, I forgot to comment on one thing that really puzzled me -- when the Rangers retreated from St. Francis, our wounded hero, Langdon, had a young Abenaki boy, named "Billy," and a cute little blonde (who supposedly had been a prisoner of the Indians for over 7 years), helping him...yet when he catches up with Rogers several weeks later, his 2 helpers have totally disappeared!...and Langdon never even mentions them! So where'd they go, hmmmm? |

I always thought that Rogers only packing a huge belt a heavy dragoon pistol and a mapcase was the worst thing about this one. I read the book, well most of it, the first half was good the second was dreck. I'm still working up a recipe for hot buttered rum from this movie..
Anyone who's interested in the author should also read "Arundel" and "Rabble in Arms". Two books that may change your thoughts about America's most famous traitor. |
