Unlike some Mohicanites, I do not speak German. The title seems to refer to a headsman, but if that is so, why was the lady hanged?

The book title is "The Headsman; or, The Abbaye des Vignerons." I haven't read it, but if you do a quick google search you'll find it online for free.
