Ukraine mobilizes after Putin's 'declaration of war'

KIEV/BALACLAVA, Ukraine - Ukraine mobilized for war on Sunday, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared he had the right to invade, creating the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.

Sarge's assessment: Gee, this story was posted more that 24-hours after the President Obama warned Russian President Putin that there would be 'costs' to any military action in Ukraine. I guess that a former KGB thug is not at all intimidated with the tough words of a former EEOC-hire Communist street agitator/lawyer (usually one in the same). I don't know what the next move of old 'Hope & Change-it' will be, but I can tell you that 'Vlad the Impaler' will not be impressed...
...You Marxists on this esteemed board (and you know who you are) may say what you want about G.W. Bush, but you cannot deny that Putin had more respect for him than he will ever have for Obama. In the world of power-politics, a 'Cowboy' will always trump a 'Commie' (either foreign or domestic)

Sarah Palin may be having a bragging rights moment.
In 2008, when she was the GOP vice presidential nominee, Palin questioned in a speech whether then-Sen. Barack Obama would have the foreign policy credentials to handle a scenario in which Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.

"After the Russian army invaded the nation of Georgia, Senator Obama's reaction was one of indecision and moral equivalence – the kind of response that would only encourage Russia's Putin to invade Ukraine next," she said in Reno, Nevada on October 21, 2008.
The former Alaska governor was happy to highlight her prediction on Friday and scold those who criticized her 2008 comments. |

Well MG, it appears that I also have had a 100% success rate on my predictions for the Obama Administration (most of which were made in 2008-2009), even though I was accused of having 'Jumped the shark' at the time...
...And "No", I certainly don't expect the Marxist Moon-Bat who made that accusation to admit that her logic was faulty, anytime soon

One commentator characterised US President Barack Obama's latest statement on Ukraine as: "Stop, or I'll say stop again."
The US has now paused preparations for this summer's Russian-hosted G8 summit.
Mr Putin does not respond to threats of condemnation. He has never sought approval, just respect.
He wants Russia to be seen as a great superpower once again, and himself as its strongman president.
If that means playing the bad cop in the West and weathering a diplomatic storm, he probably will not lose much sleep.

More recently the Kremlin accused the West of funding and fuelling anti-government street protests in Moscow.
For months, Russia has been accusing the US and EU of meddling in Ukraine for geopolitical gains. On Tuesday President Putin said Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign an association agreement with the EU last autumn "was simply used as an excuse to back opposition forces in their battle for power... it's not the first time our Western partners have done this in Ukraine".
Then there is the question of Nato. In an interview with the newspaper Kommersant in 2010, Vladimir Putin recalled how the alliance had promised the USSR it would not expand beyond its current boundaries. "They deceived us in the rudest way," Putin concluded. Could the establishment in Kiev of a pro-Western government mean future Nato membership for Ukraine? Moscow would perceive that as a direct threat to its national security. |

No Victoria, I really don't spend too much time wondering about the intolerant bigotry of others who wish to quash dissent/debate through a childish 'boycott'. Especially when such dissent takes the form of political debate, only occupying one (1) section of the many sections on this board.
In other words, if what is being discussed in this particular section offends you, then do not open and read it.

@ Monadnock Guide: What really throws a wrench in the works of our man-child president's latest Kabuki Dance is that while he is talking about 'costs' for the actions of the Russians, his minions are proposing even more cuts to our defense systems.
Not exactly a good strategy to threaten 'The Bear' with an unloaded gun

Once again MG, you hit the x-ring on the target. The president is so far out of his league against Putin, it could be considered a source of national embarrassment, if such was capable, given the legions of Low-Information Voters who put this clown in office twice. On that subject, I can understand why some would have voted for him in 2008; whether it was the novelty factor, or just being silly and ignorant (i.e. 'white guilt'). Unfortunately, the fact that so many voted for him again in 2012, certainly convinces me of how low the bar has dropped among the voting population, and how much of the population is actually part of the problem.
In closing, even the Illinois Senate would be far to much trust to invest in Mr. Obama. He would be better suited running around the streets of Chicago, armed with a staple gun and a fist-full of flyers

MPs in the southern Ukrainian region of Crimea have voted to become part of the Russian Federation.
Parliament said the decision would be put to the Crimean people for their verdict in a referendum on 16 March.
A government minister in Kiev said they believe it would be unconstitutional for Crimea to join Russia.
Crimea, a region whose population is mostly ethnic Russian, has been at the centre of tensions following the fall of Ukraine's pro-Moscow president.
Pro-Russian and Russian forces have been in de facto control of the peninsula, which already enjoys a degree of autonomy from Kiev, for several days.
The announcement from Crimea's parliament comes as EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss how to respond to Russia's troop deployment on Ukrainian soil.

To answer your question MG, in regards to NATO's ability to handle this latest misbehavior of 'The Bear', is that I don't see them (NATO) doing much of anything. Without a strong (read: Conservative politically) United States and/or United Kingdom, NATO is effectively neutered. The rest of the alliance is a mixed-bag at best (I know this firsthand from my own days in the armed forces), and without the U.S. or U.K. telling them what to do, they couldn't agree on 'free sex & beer'...

You are correct MG, it is a truly useless alliance today; and given the equally useless current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I'm certain that NATO will remain a 'paper tiger' for the foreseeable future...
...And as for Obama 'leading the charge', I know that will not be the case. Ever since the president stopped the deployment of Patriot Missile batteries to Poland in 2009, the Russians knew that they had 'their man' in the White House.

This had been an oft-asked question/complaint, but I want you to realize that the whole notion of adding political stuff to this board came from more liberal-leaning members of the community. The fact that it turned conservative was not foreseen. That's just the way it is.
There are many ways to avoid even seeing those sections of the board that a user can utilize. Instead ... most just left. I tried.
Mute point, at this stage ... with the film over 20 years old, we really can't expect the glory days to return. It was a lot of fun while it lasted and now it will be what participants want to make of it.
Nothing else to say on the matter.
