The West has condemned the upcoming referendum in Crimea as “illegitimate” and is preparing sanctions against Russia. However, the West’s seemingly random policy on other referendums hints at a double standard in their governments’ rhetoric.
Crimea will vote Sunday whether to remain an autonomous region in Ukraine or to join with Russia. Western leaders have claimed the referendum is a farce and that Russian forces have occupied the region. Moscow, however, maintains there has been no such invasion and the referendum represents the Crimeans’ right to self-determination.
In the past the West has not batted an eyelid when countries sought to hold referendums and in some cases actively supported them.

I always enjoyed (and posted about) the Falkland Islands, thousands of miles away from Britain - and deciding "they're British" - and "we" never said a word. - It's kinda like Martha's Vinyard deciding it was part of Peru, ... (Think we "might just have a problem" with that?)

Well MG, I don't know why the Obama Administration doesn't just call this the 'Crimean Spring', and support it. It appears to have gone-off in a much more civilized fashion than the gutter-rumbling, dumpster fire that was the 'Arab Spring' of a couple years ago.
Anyways, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I am having yet another "I told you so" moment, in.re. the abilities of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Hey MG, I don't know if you've seen the latest update, but apparently our own village idiot (AKA- VP Joe Biden) has now announced that the U.S. will respond to any aggression against our NATO allies... Apparently old 'Crazy Uncle Joe' fails to see how stupid he looks making such a statement; firstly, we are bound by treaty to defend our NATO allies (it's kinda where the word 'treaty' fits into North Atlantic Treaty Organization), so there is no choice in the matter. Secondly, unless something has changed overnight, the Ukraine is not a part of NATO.
Before VP Biden had his 'moment of clarity', there was SecState John 'Banana Head' Kerry (he was in Vietnam, just ask him  ) giving away the store with meaningless sanctions; and now, old 'Shotgun Joe' is going to up the ante with equally meaningless threats...
...I still cannot believe that the American people are so obtuse, that they voted this bunch of simpletons back into office 
I am so glad that I am at a point in my life where I can just sit back, sip my scotch, smoke my Pall Mall, and laugh at the floorshow

| Well, - you see, Biden has to say that stuff for awhile now. ... Seems that numb nuts Kerry has drawn so many red lines lately - he's temporarily out of red tape. No doubt Biden will make a great substitute, ... We're also obligated by treaty to help defend Japan, - great idea shortly after WWII. - With China on the move today, ... "we" just might want to take a second look at what we've signed. ... LOL. |

| Maybe Biden was talking about defending Turkey. They say they will close the Bosporus if Russia moves on the Ukraine. Who knows. Probably not him. But if you really want to see some stupid politicians, you need to come to SC and see who we re-elect, even after they have been proven themselves to be incompetent. |

Well Fitz, Turkey is a member of NATO, and that goes back to my original statement about being bound by treaty; therefore VP Biden's statement reflects a 'choice' which does not exist...

I agree Fitz, Senator Lindsey Graham is a RINO POS, who deserves a one-way trip back to obscurity. That being said, you also have Senator Tim Scott, who has the makings of a great leader and statesman.

| Sarge, Graham is just the tip of a very large iceberg, but hopefully next fall he will get to stay home. Scott seems to be OK, IF he turns out to be his own man and not a pawn of the present and past governors. In SC when someone gets removed from office all they have to do is take a break until the next election and they will get voted back in. The good ones get eased out by the political process. |

You are correct Fitz, and unfortunately the only politicians from the Palmetto State I keep track of are the ones who have 'national' implications. As for the thought that Tim Scott might be beholden to the governor who appointed him (The very hot Nikki Haley), I would rather that be the case then to have him be beholden to the Washington DC political machine.
IMHO, one of the biggest mistakes in our country's history was the passage of the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution (allowing for the direct election of senators). Before that, there was truly a balance of power, where the House of Representatives was the direct voice of the electorate, the Senate was the voice of the states (senators being appointed by state governors), and the President approved or vetoed, or simply executed the previously-approved legislation brought forward from those two houses.
