End-To-End Hike - September 2014

Join Us on Saturday, September 13th, at New Hampshire Marker #1 as we join members of the Crown Point Road Association for a walk along Historic Crown Point Road from New Hampshire Marker #1 to New Hampshire Marker # 7.

For the more adventurous, you may continue along with members of the CPRA as they follow the Crown Point Road to Vermont Marker#64 , finally reaching Fort Crown Point, New York.

A Note from Rebecca Tucker, organizer of this year's End-to-End Hike: I’m trying to keep the hike down to less than 10 miles per day. We’ll be walking on public roads as well as through the woods on old trails. - You don’t have to camp, but can do each day’s walk as it pleases you, just be sure to check each day about where we’ll stop, and the route we’ll take. Bring food, water, and wear your best hikers.

Eighteenth century clothing is not required, but there will be many of us who wear it.

My phone is 802-885-4686, my email is rwctucker@aol.com (My cell phone on the hike itself 802-738-5579 –if there’s service)

Doing fine, really, but now I have to travel by myself and that 18-hour drive is a long one! And my daughters have asked for some help at times, so I have been doing things closer to home. I still plan to go to Fort Fred in a couple of weeks.

I went up to Linville Gorge this July and hiked the mountains most of the day. My knees were feeling pretty good for the first couple of hours, then I was reminded why I gave up playing tennis!

Linville Gorge is where some of the scenes from LOTM were filmed, most famously the "George Road Ambush" and the final scene with Means, Day-Lewis and Stowe. Of course neither Rich nor Soldier #2 were there.

Hi Fitzhugh
Sorry you couldn't make it to Crown Point this weekend, but I did think of you (really!).
It was a beautiful weekend, the event included Sat and Sun morning skirmishes (read ass-kickings by the French) at Chimney Point in VT. We marched over the bridge each morning, though some opted to go by bateau. . .
The Pequawket Alliance was there en masse; together with the Regulars us Brits were outnumbered easily by 2 to 1. Kind of like too few to fight, and too many to die. . .

Soldier #2 is usually there. His clan was represented well! But Rich? Aka Rich the Hermit? "Will there be anything left to show the world that he ever did exist?"

One problem I have is that two of my favorite events are on the same weekend. Crown Point and Pemaquid. Of course I didn't make either. But if I could have made one, I really don't know which one I would have chosen.

The weather in Northern New England was great last weekend with Pemaquid included I'm sure, ...

.
When Olde Bristol Days isn’t happening, Colonial Pemaquid and Fort William Henry is a 17th century period archeological site, with a plethora of historical artifacts quite literally littering the grounds. Stone building foundations dot the area, with many more still buried under the grass and dirt. It’s sad that there isn’t more funding allotted to the park for more archeological digging, restoration, and preservation, but what is there is fantastic. Park rangers are knowledgeable about the history of the park, and are always available to answer questions. It’s a really cool site.

I understand that the Olde Bristol Days will be moved to July next year so that should be an improvement for the Pemaquid event. The last time I was there was in 2011 and I would really like to go back.
