Hey Champ,

This is going to be longer answer than I can make all at once
so let’s call this part one and please be a little patient. Also promise to let me know when the horse looks winded, much less dead.

First the ifs.

Whether he actually would have been a hero in some changed
historical context, I don’t feel he would have. You’d have to
get clear down to the Harpe brothers before you could come up
with frontier characters which seem filled with more just pure
meanness. I guess I think we would have heard about him one
way or another. Cooper would say it was just in his natur’.

The if about the Indians not having a beef with the Kentuckians
is the biggest if of all. What could have happened, or not
happened, to change it all, and when could it have been kept
from happening? I’ve wondered about it.
