Dutch deny waging war on white socks
THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Dutch Finance Ministry officials insist they are not the fashion police and deny media reports they have declared war on white socks.
The reports suggested white socks were banned after being accused by a senior official of "transgressing the limits of decent dress behavior."
A ministry spokeswoman told the BBC the statement was mere personal opinion, expressed in an interview in a staff magazine.
But, she revealed, the comments were not controversial at the ministry.
In fact, many people share the view.
A British computer expert who used to work alongside Dutch academics said many were firmly committed to their white socks, some even flaunting them beneath half-mast trousers.
"Imagine, suit trousers or snow-washed jeans, with white socks and dress shoes -- a dress-code disaster of monumental proportions," he said. "Even I know that, and I am not exactly a fashion statement myself."
The Dutch -- legendary defenders of liberalism -- remain shaken by accusations that they, of all people, would ban white socks.
"We are surprised by the international frenzy the story generated," the spokeswoman said.

I believe this particular phenomenon must be universal. Some American men do this too. (Sorry, guys!) And the ones who don't... wear dark dress socks with sandals. It seems that there might be something... um.... perhaps "unmanly"?... in their way of thinking, to show their bare feet in sandals?
Come on, guys! Show those tootsies!! 
(Of course, in the 18th century, it's a moot point anyway!) |

If it weren't for white socks, my sock drawer would be barren indeed! Often they're the only thing I can find that matches!

Nothing worse than black nylon dress socks with sandals and shorts. |
