Well, it turns out one of my best friends, Jack, saw Last of the Mohicans Friday. He came up to me in school today and said; Norm! (norm is his nickname for me.) I saw LOTM over the weekend! At first I was excited but my excitement soon turned into disappointment as he said.."Yea, it was hilarious!" HILARIOUS? I asked in amazement. "yea. he said. I love when that guys burning and they have to shoot him and when that guy gets thrown over the cliff." I could not believe how immature he was being! I mean, I dont expect everyone to like the movie, but he was mocking and making fun of it! I mean, him being one of my best friends for so long, I thought hed be a little more, well, NICE about it! I hate when people make fun of that movie, by saying its funny. What is funny about it? It just upsets me that he doesnt appreciate it. What do you all think?

He is a jerk, but that's normal for a boy his age, even if he is your best friend. As he matures -- which is a slower and later process for young men than for young women, like yourself -- he will (hopefully) learn how to be more sensitive about such things, even if his opinion differs from yours. If there are other qualities about him that outweigh this indiscretion, I'd say let it go for now. If he keeps it up, let him know you think he's being rude to you, knowing how you feel about the movie, and considering you're one of his best friends. If he STILL keeps it up, walk away! I know, "Easier said than done!" But that is the advice of a much older (and hopefully) wiser woman. Hang in there!

Hi Nora,
If he knows how much you think of the movie, I think he was just trying to get a rise out of you. Some kids that age have a hard time being serious and thoughtful about certain things. I bet he'll remember the movie and want to see it again later. Ask him again in about 5 years!

Nora -- I would just dismiss his attitude as immaturity. AND the fact he is probably trying to get you riled. But young folks don't have a premium on immaturity. When the movie came out back in '92, ALL of my coworkers at my newspaper knew how much I loved the movie. Four of them went to see it together and then spent the next week or so hovering around me and imitating the "I will find you!" line of Daniel's and goofing on "how sappy and stupid it was." And these were folks in their late 20s and 30s. So no, being immature has nothing to do with age. (Several of these same LOTM haters went gaga over "Titanic" and went to see it eight times when it came out. It was sweet revenge when some of THEM were subjected to ragging on the sappiness of that film...) Christina |

I hear you Uncaslover! I used to teach sixth grade social studies at a small town in Texas, with a varied mix of students: working class, middle class, some really poor, a few upper middle class, 46% Hispanic, 43% white, 12% Black.
This was a few years ago when wrestling was in its 90's resurgance, with the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin.
I showed the kids a video about the events that led to the fall of communism, and we were watching a scene from Poland in 1980, when the government finally came down on Solidarity with the army. There is a scene where a man stand in front of a truck (like the young man in front of the tank in Tianenmen square a few years later) The truck does not hesitate and runs right over the guy, and this is captured on film.
Many of my kids, boys and girls laughed!
I was furious! I paused the video and let them have it. "Maybe you don't realize it but that was not a movie, that was not make believe! A man stood up for what he believed in and was willing to die for it! There is nothing funny about that! Violence is not humorus! Maybe you should check out some things like this instead of wasting your time watching those foul mouthed steroid freaks every Monday night!"

Good for you! Makes me sick to think of them laughing at such a horrible thing. Sort of the same feeling I have for that insensitive video game about the Kennedy assassination. Disgusting |

Caitlin, I just heard about that game yesterday, and I couldn't help but wonder why in the world anybody would come out with a game like that. It doesn't make sense, but alot of these violent games don't make sense to me.
Nora, Like the others said, it is just immaturity on your friend's part. He just needs to grow up a little.

Ya'll have picked up on the point of how we have almost become completely de-sensitised to violence these days. Scary really!
But yeah Alex is either trying to get a 'rise out of you' like everybody will at some point or doesn't really get the whole film. I think you are very mature for your age and seem to appreciate things that older people would appreciate - much more than any young person. That's no bad thing but I can kinda see how difficult it is for you to realise that not everyone is like you. I'm like that too!

Jacy, It's not to much that I have a problem with people not being like me, it's just I don't understand why he'd make fun of it. You know? It's just, I love the movie so much, and I want everyone to get as much out of the movie as I did.

Wow, glad I'm a mature young man lol ;)
Wade: is that because of all the trashing we've done to immature young men? I didn't mean to be so harsh! After all, my son has had his share of immature years -- I was especially amused by those years between 9 and about 14 when he and his buddies were obsessed with body parts and bodily functions! I guess because I am fond of my child, I tried not to get too freaked out by his normal behavior (I read a lot, and my Mom, who was a teacher for many decades, filled me in on a lot of "little boy" psychology, which really helped me raise him). In truth, I don't think immature behavior stops at any gender lines or even age -- I still run across incredibly immature men and women from all walks of life (including MYSELF, sometimes). I'm sure everyone does. Still, young women have had to deal with some young men who can be incredibly annoying during those years when females are leaps and bounds ahead in growing up. I guess it's part of our training. The ones that are like YOU make it all worth it.
Rose By the way, everyone, I hope you all have a Fantastic 2005 -- especially those of you who reenact the French & Indian War, which starts it's official 250th Anniversary this year, and will go on until 2010! Huzzah! Hope to see some of you at the events coming up! |
