Ok... how many of you are waiting to see this one on the 18th? I know it has to be good giving that JJ Abrams is doing it...

The trailer with the Statue of Liberty's head rolling down the street had me hooked from the get go.

Sorry HJ never heard of it or seen the trailer so can't really comment. Must go look it up though. You've sparked my curiousity.

Okay, just watched the trailer and would watch when it comes out on DVD but would not pay to see it in the movie theater. Perhaps Godzilla has returned

The hipe is that it is NOT a Godzilla movie but there is a terrible monster hitting NYC. I love his other projects and this seems to be another that will be just way too cool not to watch....
quote:
Synopsis
"Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives."

quote:
J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense." In February 2007, Paramount Pictures secretly greenlit Cloverfield, to be produced by J. J. Abrams, directed by Matt Reeves, and written by Drew Goddard. The project was produced by Abrams' company, Bad Robot Productions.[9]

The poster for Escape from New York (1981) inspired the scene of the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty in CloverfieldThe casting process was carried out in secret, with no script being sent out to candidates. With production estimated to have a budget of $30 million, filming began in mid-June in New York.[9] One cast member indicated that the film would look like it cost $150 million, despite producers not casting recognizable and expensive actors.[7] Location filming, shot in digital video using hand-held video cameras,[10] took place on Coney Island, with scenes being shot at Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park and the B&B Carousel.[6] Some interior shots were filmed on a soundstage at Downey, California.[11] The film was edited to look like it was filmed with one hand-held camera, including jump cuts similar to ones found in home movies. Director Matt Reeves described the presentation, "We wanted this to be as if someone found a Handicam, took out the tape and put it in the player to watch it. What you're watching is a home movie that then turns into something else." Reeves explained that the pedestrians documenting the severed head of the Statue of Liberty with the camera phones was reflective of the contemporary period. "Cloverfield very much speaks to the fear and anxieties of our time, how we live our lives. Constantly documenting things and putting them up on YouTube, sending people videos through e-mail - we felt it was very applicable to the way people feel now," the director said.[12]

The decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty was inspired by the poster of the 1981 film Escape from New York, which had shown the head lying in the streets in New York despite not appearing in the film itself. According to Reeves, "It's an incredibly provocative image. And that was the source that inspired [producer] J.J. [Abrams] to say, 'Now this would be an interesting idea for a movie.'"[13]

The film was titled Cloverfield from the beginning, but the title changed throughout production before it was finalized as the original title. Matt Reeves explained that the title was changed frequently due to the hype caused by the teaser trailer, "That excitement spread to such a degree that we suddenly couldn't use the name anymore. So we started using all these names like Slusho and Cheese. And people always found out what we were doing!" The director said that "Cloverfield" was the government's case designate for the monster, comparing the titling to that of the Manhattan Project. "And it's not a project per se. It's the way that this case has been designated. That's why that is on the trailer, and it becomes clearer in the fi

Well I guess people were not as happy with "Cloverfield" as my family was. Opening weekend of 41 Million, setting a new record, but this weekend it only made 12. That is a 68% drop in attendance....that's not good.....

The hubby took our two sons to see it last Saturday evening but when in line they overheard two people behind them saying how they had seen it and it was not great so they went to see "National Treasure Book of Secrets" instead. Hubby had been wanting to see that one anyway.

So my question is: does Cloverfield live up to all the hype surrounding it? (Basically this boils down to the fact that I'm (a) extremely cheap and (b) extremely broke and don't want to spend $10 to see it on the big screen if it's not completely awesome! )

My son my wife and I throughly enjoyed it. Be aware that it is shot with a hand held camera and the gyrations and movement can give you a feeling of being on a rollercoaster, so don't sit up close to the screen. Try to hit it on a matinee where you don't have to pay $10...Save that money for the popcorn....two tickets, two medium popcorns and a large drink and we could have gone to the Olive Garden for a nice dinner....

I am very glad to know this, Hawk. I have a real problem with that, and can get dizzy and nauseous very easily. I don't think I will be renting this movie, partly for that reason. I have never liked that type of camera work and it seems to be becoming more popular.

The movie is shot in a "Blair Witch" style in that it is supposed to be a video that was found in Central Park after the attack. It does have a great sense of realism and it will make ya jump in yer seat. As I said, if you think you will have a problem with it just sit nearer the back of the theatre.

I didn't see "Blair Witch Project" only because I knew it would scare the you-know-what out of me!

Unfortunately, my problem with vertigo is so extreme that sitting in the back of the theater, which I ordinarily do anyway, won't help me. I'll just have to pass on this one.

My daughter kept saying how good and how scary "Blair Witch Project" was, so my wife and I decided to see it on the big screen. We kept waiting for the scary part and the next thing we knew the credits came on the screen. We just looked at each other and asked "when was the scary part"? Then we asked "when was the good part". As someone once said about a historical location for which he had paid admission, "I felt like I had my pockets picked".

Yes, but you have to understand, Fitz, that all it takes to scare me is for someone to whirl around suddenly and say, "BOO!" I scare very easily.

Anyway... Hawk, I am glad you enjoyed "Cloverfield."

The only thing scary about that movie is how bored you have suddenly become.

Blair Witch seemed to be one of those movies that either petrified people or left them completely cold. I saw it with a group of 10 people. Seven of them hated it. Three of us (me included) were scared out of our minds.

What kind of monster is it in Cloverfield? A reptilian ripoff or something different? I don't want to spoil it for anybody, just wondering if the monster is worth spending the money to see.

The monster is justthat.. a monster. it's not clear where is came from or what it wants...it's just huge and pissed off..there is a underground that thinks that this maybe a "pre-quel" of more in the same venue. JJ Abrams is the producer of "LOST" where nothing is as it seems and nothing is finalized either.....there could be more...who knows....
