While reading the script pages for Massacre Valley, I learned something new: That Chingachgook was the one who dispatched the guard holding the keys to Hawkeye's manacles. I thought the man had simply fallen victim to a gunshot from the woods!

But as I understand from the script, as the confusion of the attack began, Chingachgook apparently took the opportunity to carry out something the three of them had all understood without words -- to free Hawkeye in any event.

The script says that, as Hawkeye is led from the fort, and Uncas and Chingachgook fall in silently beside him, they convey looks to each other that indicate they all understand that they will seize the first opportunity to free Hawkeye.

It makes sense to me now, but I don't know why this never occurred to me before! Is this a surprise to anyone else?
